Just When You Thought Reality TV Couldn't Get Any More Exploitative or Degrading ...
I had just finished my earlier post about Americans' professed disgust with the state of modern TV, when the following press release arrived in my inbox:
NEW YORK, SEPTEMBER 12, 2007 – P-Star Entertainment today announced the creation of “America’s Next Hot Porn Star,” (www.americasnexthotpornstar.com), a one of a kind, mature rated adult reality TV series which will debut on September 13, 2007 exclusively on Pay-Per-View Cable Television. Viewers will see first hand the selection process for women trying to become porn stars and the behind the scenes preparation for what it takes to make it in the business. America’s Next Hot Porn Star will feature twelve women vying for $10,000 and a start in the Adult Entertainment Industry. Pay-Per-View Cable viewers will be able to tune into five monthly episodes.
Translation: Calling all skanks, sacrifice your dignity and you might win a whopping ten grand!

America’s Next Hot Porn Star puts 12 gorgeous amateur aspiring porn stars in a mansion situated high in the hills overlooking the Valley of Los Angeles. Viewers will be able to see the starlets participate in photo shoots, lap dance competitions, sensual kissing, girl on girl action and sex scenes. ... The show encourages audience participation, via text messaging and 800 number voting....
That is, assuming audience members can dial or text-message with one hand ...
Oh well, at least they called Daily News Country "the Valley of Los Angeles," and didn't impugn the San Fernando Valley's (ahem) good name in the process.
Still, can't say I'm surprised. What shocks me most is that it took someone this long to give this tawdry idea a try. What's most sad is that there are "girls" who think participating in this program is the key to a successful, happy future -- and there are unscrupulous profiteers all too ready to take advantage of them.

Um, I don't think anybody needs a contest to become a porn star, either. Just walk into Vivid and drop your drawers.

Sadly, many of these women who will do this won't even think they are sacrificing their dignities. In some twisted way, many of them will convince themselves they are "em(gag)powered."
