LAUSD Goes to Lunch Lady Land
Earlier this week, the Daily News editorialized against the LAUSD's decision to turn cafeteria workers into "full-time" (four hours a day) employees, so that they would qualify for full health benefits. As we noted in the edit, the decision will cost the district $105 million over the next three years -- a huge expense that was never budgeted.
Well, now, the Times reports, we know where the money will come from:
To find the money in what officials said was a bare-bones budget, (Superintendent David) Brewer brought forth several cost-saving measures, including a hiring freeze in the district's administrative offices. He also reduced the number of teachers administrators can hire to fill unexpected vacancies.
So if a teacher leaves the school, the school can't necessarily hire a replacement, which means too few teachers for too many kids. For this we can thank the school board. Remember that next time you hear members prattle on about the need for "class-size reduction."
But if there is a silver lining to this story, it is that it allows us to post this work from the late, great Chris Farley:
