Mitt's muddled message

romneypoint.jpg

I really don't get the wording of Mitt Romney's new "look at me, evangelicals!" TV ad targeting gay marriage, in which he says:

"As Republicans we must oppose discrimination and defend traditional marriage: one man, one woman."

Is he saying that gay marriage is discrimination? Is he saying that gay marriage discriminates against traditional marriages? Is he trying to say that he doesn't believe opposing gay marriage is discrimination, in which case he should have elaborated? Is he trying to head off charges of discrimination by throwing in the "by the way, we oppose discrimination"? Is someone trying to take away traditional marriage and he'll be the great defender against that?

My head hurts. It must be Campaign 2008.
