Moms do wage war

| | Comments (4) |

sallyfield.jpgIn her bleeped Emmy acceptance speech Sunday night, Sally Field said, "And, let’s face it, if the mothers ruled the world, there would be no (bleepy bleep) wars in the first place."

Blogger The Stiletto, though, reminds Norma Rae that in her lifetime alone there have been three female heads of state -- all moms -- who have waged war: Golda Meir, Indira Gandhi and Margaret Thatcher.

The Stiletto further suggests that Field switch from hawking osteoporosis drugs to pitching Aricept.

When is Hollywood going to get it that the regular working class person cares little about what comes out of their mouth. The Emmy's should be replaced with quality programming that has family values instead of liberal thinkers using an award show to make political statements. I guess the viewer polls proved football was better entertainment.

Golda Meir had to promote a preventive strike against countries surrounding Israel. For her it was a matter of life or death. Her strike against foreign countries was not for financial gains and I am sure that her son born in 1924 and her daughter born in 1926 took part in the defense of Israel, something that we cannot say about our leaders who (for whatever reason) start wars and kept their progenies safely tucked away.

Maybe it's just me, but given a choice of George Bush or this dingbat in the White House the next time planes crash into buildings, I'll take GWB every time. The management of Iraq has been substandard, and he's been awful on fundamentals like the border. But, for goodness sakes, Sally Field couldn't make a battle field decision to save her kids life... or anyone else's.

I'm offended by Dante's glib, leftie view that the Bush Admin. went into the Iraqi (and Afghan?) was "for financial gains." Really insulting to the thousands of Americans who have died, and many more returned injured or maimed. They really believed they were going over to promote democracy and freedom which is, I believe, the impetus for the wars.

There was also a desire to prevent the Iraqi oil reserves from falling into Iran's hands, but that is a rational policy decision. (Not to say that Cheney and Bush's people didn't also profit, but that wasn't the motivation for the war. IF there was a personal issue for Bush, it was finishing the war his dad didn't.)

The fact that this pretext for the wars were ill-advised and naive in the first place, is another matter: Anyone with the least bit of history or understanding of the region would have known that the Sunni-Shiite (and Kurdish) tribal rivalries are deeply religious and historical ones, not to be bridged by some western-centric gov't.

The best we can hope for is a country divided into tribal regions or cantons, like the former Yugoslavia or even Belgium.

As for that lamebrain Sally Field, she wouldn't know where to find any of these counties on the map, let alone have a valid opinion.
