I don't have as strong opinions about Pope Pius XII as does Gail or many devout Catholics or Jews.

But I always respected Newsweek's old religion writer, Kenneth Woodward, and he wrote a decade ago a fascinating defense of the wartime pope, here. I'd love to hear others' thoughts on it.

Interesting points, Rob, though I don't know why more people didn't come forward. Also, his letter to the NY Times could have named the groups who were being targeted. It will be interesting to see what the archives will show when they are opened in 2014.

Sorry for the sarcasm, but I'm truly amazed that Woodward's article ever saw the light of day, even in 1998.
