City Manager David Carmany has hired the firm to ensure that ARCO "does its job."

Dudek & Associates, Inc. (http://www.dudek.com/) will be an independent expert in reviewing the ARCO station at Fifth Street and Pacific Coast Highway.

Carmany said he decided to get the firm under contract immediately, adding he will seek council ratification of this contract Jan. 11.

Dudek is a full service firm and the principal representative, Peter Quinlan, is a licensed geologist with a specialty in hydrogeology and an expert in examining the likely path of various contaminants, including hydrocarbons, through soil, soil vapors and groundwater.

ARCO has agreed to reimburse the city for its consultant costs, according to the city manager..

About the authors

Joe Segura, a mild-mannered reporter for a major metropolitan newspaper, has covered Gotham City, er Long Beach, for 34 years. During his very, very long -- endless -- tenure, he's covered almost every beat, and he was the main writer for BeachWeek, which focused on life and lifestyles of the shoreline communities from downtown Long Beach to the Huntington Beach pier.

He's also been keenly interested in environmental issues, long before green became fashionable, writing extensively about the battles to save Bolsa Chica (Huntington Beach), Hellman (Seal Beach) and Los Cerritos (Long Beach) wetlands.
