Pony All-Stars 'get on the bus'

20080918-PN19-PONY01-JG.jpg Some called it a parade but it was really a bus load of All-Stars riding down Pine Ave. The streets weren't closed and the bus had to stop at all the red lights as the Long Beach Pony rode a double-decker bus down Pine Ave. Long Beach defeated Chinese-Taipei, 3-2, on Oliver Van Buskirk's home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the Pony World Series in Washington, Pa. on Aug. 16. Whoopi, Eddie and Rodney in Long Beach

Looks like Eddie Murphy, left, Whoopi Goldberg and Rodney Dangerfield will be permanent fixtures at the comedy club. Other comedic statues include Jim Carrey, Chris Rock and Ellen DeGeneres.

20080905-PN06-ZGALLERIE-JG.jpgZ Gallerie announced it will close its Pine Ave. location when the building, which Z Galleire owns, is sold. The retailer sits in the same block that used to house Express, Bath & Body Works and Crate and Barrel but now is a string of empty store fronts.

Tuckered Out

The students were students at Tucker Elementary School Cleveland was a counselor the now closed school. This blog is a journal of Southern California, through the lens of Jeff Gritchen. It's updated frequently with pictures, photo tips and musings from the various assignments he covers as a staff photographer for the Press-Telegram and Torrance Daily Breeze.

Gritchen has been documenting the diverse city of Long Beach since 1998. He covers everything from the Cambodian community to prep sports to gang ridden neighborhoods to the annual running of the Long Beach Grand Prix. He covered destruction Hurricane Katrina brought to Long Beach, Mississippi and traveled to Southeast Asia to document a rural Cambodian girl's as she traveled to the U.S. for life-altering heart surgery. He has won numerous state and national awards, including an international NPPA Best of Photojournalism award in 2003 and Best News Photo from the Los Angeles Press Club in 2010. In 2011, the photo staffs of the Long Beach Press-Telegram and Torrance Daily Breeze merged. Now he covers all of Southern Los Angeles County. He can be contacted at
