PHOTOS: Warship arrives in Seal Beach

Naval Weapons Station on February 26, 2010, in preparation for her commissioning next week. The USS Dewey is guided missile destroyer and is named for Adm. George Dewey, who led his squadron of warships into Manila Bay in 1898, destroying the Spanish fleet in only two hours without a single American loss. Dewey became admiral of the Navy, a rank created for him in 1903. The ship named for Dewey is the 55 th of 62 Arleigh Burke-class destroyers either in commission, under construction or on order. She arrived at Los Angeles International Airport with three year-old Socheat Nha, left, and Socheat's father, Phin Ken. The three year-old girl needs surgery similar to Davik's. Hearts Without Boundaries helped Davik in 2008 and is now helping Socheat Nha. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and occurs forty-six days (forty days not counting Sundays) before Easter. Ash Wednesday gets its name from the practice of placing ashes on the forehead as a sign of repentance. The pieces were made by Patrick Vogel in his SIgnal HIll, Calif. studio. Vogel also installed the 9/11 memorial on top of Signal HIll and the stainless steal representations of a DC-8 vertical stabilizers at the entrance to Douglas Park in Long Beach, Calif. The business park is located at the former home of McDonnell Douglas Aircraft. Each of the six structures are almost 24 feet tall and weigh 400 pounds each. See more pictures>>

Brown is a 24-time NHRA winner. He is the only racer in NHRA history to have won races in both Top Fuel and Pro Stock Motorcycle. Brown will be competing at the 50th annual Winternationals, Feb. 11-14, at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona at the L.A. County Fairgrounds. This blog is a journal of Southern California, through the lens of Jeff Gritchen. It's updated frequently with pictures, photo tips and musings from the various assignments he covers as a staff photographer for the Press-Telegram and Torrance Daily Breeze.

Gritchen has been documenting the diverse city of Long Beach since 1998. He covers everything from the Cambodian community to prep sports to gang ridden neighborhoods to the annual running of the Long Beach Grand Prix. He covered destruction Hurricane Katrina brought to Long Beach, Mississippi and traveled to Southeast Asia to document a rural Cambodian girl's as she traveled to the U.S. for life-altering heart surgery. He has won numerous state and national awards, including an international NPPA Best of Photojournalism award in 2003 and Best News Photo from the Los Angeles Press Club in 2010. In 2011, the photo staffs of the Long Beach Press-Telegram and Torrance Daily Breeze merged. Now he covers all of Southern Los Angeles County. He can be contacted at
