LAKEWOOD, CALIF. USA -- California State Assemblyman Warren Furutani (D-South Los Angeles County) speaks to students at Lakewood High School on January 7, 2011. Furutani spoke students who have proposed a bill to keep solicitors at least 100 ft away from all California schools.
U.S. Government teacher Wendy Salaya is one of three senior teachers who created projects for their Odyssey Small Learning Center students. Her project is called "Civic Voice Legislative Democracy Project." The students -- who are all seniors -- meet once a month on "Focus Fridays" over three class periods (2nd, 3rd and 4th) that are set aside to work on their project. The "Civic Voice" students sent letters to their legislative representatives about creating a safety zone around schools of 100-feet to prevent solicitation of minors as they arrive at and leave school. Since the letters originated from a high school in our district, Assembly member Furutani, who is a former school board member and community college board member, offered to meet with them about their legislation. The "Civic Voice" students will be the sponsors of the legislation and will continue to be involved in the creation and progress of the legislation as it goes through committees. They will even be asked to travel to Sacramento to testify in committee in support of their bill. See more pictures>>
