PHOTOS: Banners of Honor

201106230-PN01-BANNERS02-JG.jpgLOS ALAMITOS, CALIF. USA -- Brigadier General Keith Jones receives a medal for duty from Nancy Karmelich at the Los Alamitos (Calif.) Joint Forces Training Center on June 30, 2011. Karmelich is the founder of Banners of Honor, a program to hang banners honoring military personal along the streets of Los Alamitos, Calif.

Seventy six banners were unveiled during a ceremony at the base. The new banners will join others already hanging from lamp posts in the streets of Los Alamitos, Calif. When these banners are hung there will be over 100 hanging Along Katella Ave. from Walker Street to the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway and along Bloomfield Street and Lexington Drive. Banners will also hang along Constitution Ave on the base.

The Insurance Exchange Building was known as the Middough Building when it opened in 1925. The building was built by Lorne and Way Middough who moved their men's and boy's clothing store into the first floor. When Guy was discharged from the Navy in 1945, he couldn't find work back east so he hitchhiked to California where he was trained in the sheet-metal business. In 1950, he opened his own shop in Signal Hill. He married, raised children, all of whom attended Poly. One was killed in Vietnam. in all these years, Mel never received a high-school diploma. This blog is a journal of Southern California, through the lens of Jeff Gritchen. It's updated frequently with pictures, photo tips and musings from the various assignments he covers as a staff photographer for the Press-Telegram and Torrance Daily Breeze.

Gritchen has been documenting the diverse city of Long Beach since 1998. He covers everything from the Cambodian community to prep sports to gang ridden neighborhoods to the annual running of the Long Beach Grand Prix. He covered destruction Hurricane Katrina brought to Long Beach, Mississippi and traveled to Southeast Asia to document a rural Cambodian girl's as she traveled to the U.S. for life-altering heart surgery. He has won numerous state and national awards, including an international NPPA Best of Photojournalism award in 2003 and Best News Photo from the Los Angeles Press Club in 2010. In 2011, the photo staffs of the Long Beach Press-Telegram and Torrance Daily Breeze merged. Now he covers all of Southern Los Angeles County. He can be contacted at
