The Los Angeles Sports Council released its nominees for the best sports moments of 2006 in the Los Angeles/Orange County area. In addition to voting on the best baseball, basketball, football and hockey moments of the year, there is an auto racing category.
The three choices are:
1. Champ Car World Series driver Sebastien Bourdais winning the Grand Prix of Long Beach.
2. NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne winning the Busch and Nextel Cup series races at California Speedway in September.
3. AMA Superbike rider Ben Spies's performance in the Suzuki Superbike Challenge doubleheader at California Speedway.
Looks like the Los Angeles Sports Council missed one here.
No offense to Spies, but either Tony Schumacher or John Force should be the third choice.
Schumacher culminated his NHRA top fuel season by erasing the largest deficit in series hisory and winning his third straight championship at Pomona Raceway in November.
Force won his record-setting 14th NHRA funny car championship at Pomona on the same weekend.
Voters have until Jan. 8 to make their selections in 18 categories.
The results will be announced Jan. 21 at a televised awards show on Fox Sports Net Prime Ticket. The show will be at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and hosted by Bill McDonald and Petro Papadakis.
