California Speedway by the numbers
Jimmie Johnson won the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series race at California Speedway on Sunday night. It was his series-leading fifth of the year.
What that means for Johnson is that he will be the top-seeded driver once the Chase starts if Jeff Gordon does not win the race at Richmond International Raceway next weekend.
"It's very satisfying," said Johnson, driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports. "The season's all about the championship. It's time for the pressure to pick up. It's time for the Chase to start and my guys are ready for it."
Gordon has four wins, but leads the Cup standings with one race to go before the Chase starts. The drivers will be seeded in the Chase by the numbers of wins they recorded during the first 26 races of the year. The top 12 drivers in the Cup standings will qualify for the Chase.
Ten drivers have clinched spots in the Chase. Clint Bowyer and Martin Truex, the ninth and 10th place drivers in the Cup standings, need only to start the race at Richmond to qualify for the Chase.
Kurt Busch is the 11th place driver and is 141 points ahead of Dale Earnhardt Jr., the 13th place driver. Busch needs to finish 36th or better at Richmond to clinch a spot in the Chase.
Kevin Harvick is in 12th place in the Cup standings and is 128 points ahead of Earnhardt Jr. Harvick needs to finish 32nd or better at Richmond to clinch a spot in the Chase.
"It doesn't look like we're going to make it," said Earnhardt Jr., driver of the No. 8 Chevrolet for Dale Earnhardt Inc. "But we're not going to quit until they tell us we're out."
