Only one driver has won thee straight championships in NASCAR's top division, what is now the Sprint Cup Series. Cale Yarborough won three straight Winston Cup championships from 1976-78.
Jimmie Johnson has a chance to match that feat. He has won the past two Cup championships and can join Yarborough as the only other driver to win three in a row.
Johnson called his chance at making history "unbelievable."
"Every year, I look for different things to motivate me," said Johnson, driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports who was taking part in Monday's Preseason Thunder test session at Daytona International Speedway. "In a sense, chasing history is that."
In addition to chasing Yarborough's record of three straight championships, Johnson said he wants to win four Cup championships and match the mark of his teammate, Jeff Gordon.
"I would love to win three in a row and be one of two guys ever to do that," Johnson said. "I look at Jeff with four championships and think I've got a lot of years racing left in me. Is that a mark I can get to? I look for things to motivate myself."
But Johnson knows it won't be easy.
"Not standing here saying I'm going to Babe Ruth this thing and call it and get it done," Johnson said. "Everybody needs something to motivate themselves. That's my motivation. I want to win three in a row and look for a fourth and keep rolling if I can."
