Richard Childress Racing will add fourth Cup team in 2009
Richard Childress Racing will join the ranks of the four-car NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams when they add another car in 2009.
The team announced a partnership with General Mills to be able to add a fourth Cup car starting next year. Richard Childress Racing has teams for drivers Kevin Harvick, Jeff Burton and Clint Bowyer and was the only Cup team to qualify all of its drivers in the Chase last year.
There are only a handful of Cup teams that have four cars, the maximum allowed by NASCAR. Roush Fenway Racing has five, but established that number before NASCAR implemented its four-car rule.
Hendrick Motorsports and Dale Earnhardt Inc. have four-car teams in the Cup Series.
Richard Childress Racing will announce the driver for its No. 33 Chevrolet at a later date.
“RCR is honored to represent General Mills and its Cheerios, Hamburger Helper and many other brands in the NASCAR Cup Series,” said Richard Childress, president and CEO of Richard Childress Racing. “The partnership is another step in RCR’s continued association with blue-chip global brands and companies. General Mills has a great history of activating its NASCAR programs so our focus now turns to the short list of drivers we feel will help continue that tradition as well as be at the same competitive level on the track as our current drivers and teams.”
