Halloween parades roll in Rowland Heights

Scary! Very scary! That's all we can say about some of the costumes at the annual Halloween parades in elementary schools throughout the Rowland Unified School District.

Happy Halloween to all our Rowland families. Have a safe celebration, watch out for the little ones while they're out trick or treating this evening.

Let's not make it scary in real life!

Howling good time in Hacienda

Happy Halloween to all the girls and ghouls in Hacienda Heights. The scary celebration got off to a great start with a pumpkin decorating contest at Los Molinos Elementary School. Special thanks to the firemen from Station 91 for coming down the hill to judge the contest.

The drum line from Los Altos High School was also kind enough to come for the big Halloween parade at 9 a.m. when ghosts, witches and many other costumed created strutted their stuff around the playground.

The day will end with a large Monster Bash Carnival. The PTA will offer many tables of activities for the kids to enjoy after school. And they say Halloween can't be safe and sane.

Yesterday, the students dressed as nerds to show you're smart if you don't start drugs, alcohol and tobacco. On Thursday, the kids will wear crazy socks and ties to school for Tie Down Drugs/Sock It to Drugs Day.

The school will end the week by having everyone wear red to school. If it's Friday, it must be We’re Out! Drugs Day. Thanks to Ryan and the student council for coming up with some great ideas for Red Ribbon Week.

New library is a real wonder

The Wonder of Reading Library opens today at Villacorta Elementary School in La Puente. The beautiful new library was sponsored by Disney and the Wonder of Reading, a nonprofit group that has renovated many school libraries.

The cool new facility including reading steps, a Disney corner and twice the room of the old library. In addition, the library has $10,000 worth of new books for the students to read.

Volunteer tutors are needed to help students with their reading. Training will be provided free of charge for anyone who has a few hours every week to work with our students.

Thanks to Principal Elaine Ganiko and Librarian Barbara Wallace for showing us the wonderful library. And thanks to Disney's Joan McCarthy for supporting our local school.

Kaufman Memorial Fund helps local teachers

Just got off the phone with Sumner Kaufman. On his 88th birthday, Sumner donated $15,000 to the Rowland Unified School District for the Shirley Kaufman Memorial Fund. He established the fund in 1990 to honor his late wife, who taught in Rowland for 22 years.

Shirley inspired teachers and students over her many years of teaching. Now her family, including two grandsons, are helping Rowland teachers afford extra projects through the Kaufman Fund.

School officials note that Sumner has donated more than $100,000 since the fund began. That's an amazing amount for anyone to raise for our schools. Happy birthday Sumner, thanks for being so generous.

Get healthy at Steinmetz Senior Center

Steinmetz Senior Center had a good turnout at today's health fair. Many seniors lined up for free screenings, which included blood pressure, ultrasounds and other exams.

Many health groups set up informations booths that offered a wealth of the latest health news. They ranged from the Alzheimer's Association to local hospitals and clinics.

County agencies also welcomed local seniors with a variety of county services. Kudos to all/1

Read me a story

Principal Jan Castle took time from her busy schedule to read a story to her students this morning at Workman Elementary School in the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District.

Since reading is fundamental to our children's education, it's great to see an administrator reinforce it's value with their students. I hope everyone takes time at home to read to their kids.

Wonder of Reading indeed!

Stopped by Villacorta Elementary School today for a quick tour of their new Wonder of Reading library. Very impressive.

The library has doubled in size, with $10,000 worth of new books. In addition, there is new carpeting, paint, window treatments and shelving. Awesome!

Thanks to Disney who helped sponsor the local library through The Wonder of Reading nonprofit group. The nonprofit organization has already renovated two other schools and is working on several other in the district.

See my story about the new library in the Highlanders.

Off to Whiskey Pete's

Good luck to area seniors from the Steinmetz Senior Center in Hacienda Heights, who are off for a two-day jaunt to Whiskey Pete's Casino tomorrow.

The luck seniors will be staying overnight at the resort before returning Thursday afternoon. Don't know how lucky they will be, but we wish them all the best.

Besides at $29 per person double occupancy, or $44 for a single room including transportation and a free buffet, the seniors have already won. Have fun!

Rowland inducts Hall of Fame nominees

Rowland High School honored some amazing alumni over the weekend. Three were inducted into the school's Hall of Fame at the football game on Friday night.

Dr. James Swift runs the largest pediatric critical care company in the country. His wife jokingly calls me "Dr. McDreamy" but she's probably not that far off for this Rowland grad who was captain of the football and track teams.

Myron McClure, right, is an All-American at Purdue University. He hope to compete in track and field at the next Olympics. Right now he's finishing his doctorate in agriculture and hopes to help farmers in Africa.

Retired Rowland Principal Thomas Aney was a driving force at the high school for many years. He has influenced many generations of students. He pushed for a new stadium, which bears his name. Congratulations to all!

Happy birthday to Baldwin Academy

Happy Birthday!

Baldwin Academy celebrated its 50th birthday this morning, with a big party on the blacktop at the top school in La Puente.

The elementary school in the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District offers a lot of good programs for its students. Congratulations to the staff and students on their big five-oh.

Does anyone want to send some photos to highlanders@sgvn.com to share with our community?
