Grandparents, CHiPs and fall festivals

On the last day before their Thanksgiving recess, Hacienda schools are keeping busy.

Palm Elementary celebrated Grandparent's Day from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Bixby school held a “CHiPS for Kids” Assembly in the cafeteria at 9 a.m.

Wing Lane Elementary will hold its Fall Festival, with a performance by the fourth grade at 6 p.m. tonight in the cafeteria.

Rowland Heights Park offers Thanksgiving dinner

Happy Thanksgiving! Rowland Park will hold a holiday dinner tonight, beginning at 6 p.m. in the county park located at 1500 South Banida Ave. The big event is sponsored by the county department of parks and recreation.

Come out and enjoy a festive turkey dinner with all the trimmings. Last year, 300 people attended the event. Officials said that local groups will also perform during the annual Thanksgiving dinner.

Jackson receives full scholarship to UNLV

Congratulations to Rowland High School senior Cursty Jackson who has received a full four-year volleyball scholarship to the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. This terrific athlete was a two-time all-league selection.

Family and friends gathered Thursday to watch her sign the official papers accepting the generous offer. This is only the third Rowland Raider to receive a full scholarship in a Division IA school.

California Elementary holds blood drive

California Elementary School is holding a blood drive for the American Red Cross until 7 p.m. tonight. The great event is being held in Elliot Auditorium on the West Campus. Stop by and give the gift of life.

Two other schools in the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District are holding awards ceremonies today.
Fairgrove Academy held its Awards Assembly for second graders at noon. Workman High School wil lhost the District and School Scholars Awards Night tonight in the Den from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

In other news, Temple Elementary held its Harvest Festival this afternoon. And Los Altos High School offers its fall play “Othello,” again at 7 p.m. in Room A1.

Nogales athletes visit Yorbita

Thanks to Yorbita Elementary School and the Nogales High School athletes for taking the time to talk to us during the Reading Buddies program.

The Rowland Unified school has invited athletes from the local high school to come to the primary school once a month to read to the kids.

Principal Erika Krohn said this shows the students that the athletes think that reading is important and it gives many of the kids a male role model to look up to.

Local schools celebrate Veteran's Day

Students at Yorbita Elementary School in the Rowland Unified School District celebrated Veteran's Day last week. Two of the student's dad, Sgt. Arreola came to the school to discuss patriotism.

Local schools are still celebrating Veteran's Day. Kwis Elementary in Hacienda Heights is holding an assembly to remember our veterans at 10:30 a.m. today in the cafeteria.

Glenelder Elementary will follow with a flag ceremony in front of the school at 2 p.m. The Hacienda Heights school always does a great job.


Rowland plans health fair for employees

It's that time of the year again. Yes, open enrollment time for employees of the Rowland Unified School District. Time for employees to switch between insurance plans, add or delete dependents or make any other changes to their health insurance.

Insurance representatives will be available for 3 days from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Nov. 13, 14 and 15 in the Hideout at Rowland High School.

On Thursday, the district will hold a health fair with free massages, flu shots for $20, and a raffle.For more information, contact Yvonne Johnson at (626)854-8394.

'You Can't Take It With You' opens

If you're looking for something fun to do, check out the fall play at Rowland High School. The students are performing the hilarious "You Can't Take It With You."

The comedy about a delightfully eccentric family won a Pulitzer Prize. The play ran on Broadway for 837 performances. Sold to Columbia Pictures, the play won an Academy Award for best picture.

The performance is 7 p.m. tonight. The show will continue with a 2 p.m. matinee and 7 p.m. evening performance Saturday, Nov. 10 and 17. Evening shows also will be held 7 p.m. Nov. 15 and 16.
Tickets are $8.50 presale and $9.50 at the door.

Veterans enjoy dinner program at senior center

Kudos to the folks at the Steinmetz Senior Center in Hacienda Heights. They honored our veterans last night with a wonderful dinner and patriotic program.

The veterans were all excited to receive plaques and certificates honoring their service for our country. A video show of them in their original service uniforms next to their current photos was very impressive.
Many looked too young to have fought for our country in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

Local schools got into the act today. California school had a Patriotic Assembly at 9:30 a.m. Anyone want to send some photos to Highlanders@sgvn.com. The school will hold a Family Math Night in Elliott Auditorium at 6:00 p.m.

Orange Grove had its Veteran’s Day Assembly on the patio at 10 a.m., while Shadybend met in front of the flagpole for an assembly at 8:20 a.m. Send us some photos and we'll put them on the Web and paper.

If you feel like some local entertainment, check out the fall play at Los Altos High School. The young thespians are performing "Othello" in Room A1 at 7 p.m. tonight and Saturday.

Veterans honored in Hacienda Heights

Steinmetz Senior Center in Hacienda Heights will honor our veterans at dinner, beginning at 5 p.m. today. Officials say many veterans will be attending the special event.

The center has gathered many pictures of the veterans from their service years, so it should be fun to see our veterans then and now. Nothing like a look back!

So congratulations to all our veterans, thanks for you valuable service to America! God bless you all!

Parents and teachers confer in Rowland schools

Parents will have their say today with parent conferences scheduled at many schools in the Rowland Unified School District.

Alvarado Intermediate will hold conferences from 1-4 p.m. and 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Rincon will talk to parents from 1:30 - 4 p.m.; and 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. From 1:30 - 5:30 p.m., teachers will meet with parents at Giano.

The Board of Education will meet from 7-10 p.m. tonight.

Connections with the Future a success

Thanks to everyone for making the Connections to the Future luncheon in Rowland Unified such a success yesterday. The seniors from Rowland and Nogales High Schools were great, sharing their enthusiasm for the certificate program.

Guest speaker Maria Contreras-Sweet was terrific. She really shows how an immigrant can achieve so much through hard work and dedication.

Thanks to the many businessmen who attended the luncheon to talk with the seniors about their career choices and opportunities. It was a job well done!

Chen and Hsu win spots on Hacienda La Puente board

Congratulations to Jay F. Chen and Norman Hsu on their election to the Hacienda La Puente Unified School Board. In the final tally, Chen received 3, 634 votes (26 percent), while incumbent Hsu got 2,898 (21 percent).

Candidates John M. Eckman and Jeannie Garcia came next with 2,751 and 2,658 votes respectively. That's 20 percent for Eckman and 19 percent for Garcia.

The remaining votes were spent between Erica Holloway and Barbara "B.J." Moore. Thanks to all for working to make our schools a better place for our kids.

Celebrating academic success in Hacienda La Puente Unified

Let's all celebrate academics! That's just what the students and staff at California Elementary are doing in the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District.

Fifth and six graders will be celebrating at 1 p.m. in Elliott Auditorium. Goooo!!! Academics.

Fairgrove Academy also honored excellent performance at an awards assembly in the cafeteria. Sixth through eighth graders met at 8:30 p.m. followed by grades 3-5 at 9:30 a.m.

Students connect with area businesses

More than 100 senior seminar students from Nogales and Rowland High Schools will meet with business and community leaders today. They will practice employment skills such as how to network as well as business etiquette and presentations.

The annual Connections to the Future luncheon is attended by more than 200 local business and community members. The students learn more about the industry they're interested in working for.

The guest speaker is Maria Contreras-Sweet, Managing Partner/Co-Founder of FORTIUS Holdings and
Board Director/Executive Chairwoman for Promerica Bank. She is the first Latina to serve in the Governor's Cabinet for Gray Davis as Secretary of Business, Transportation and Housing.

Hacienda schools take the bully pulpit

Bully for them. Bixby School in Hacienda Heights had a Bully Free Assembly in the cafeteria this afternoon. Good for them, bullies are a perennial problem.

Palm School will play “The Bully Game” on Wednesday at 1 p.m. The assembly is for second to fifth graders. Not sure what's involved, maybe somebody could give us a comment.

This afternoon, Cedarlane is playing Fairgrove in football. May the best team win.

Awards and other moving events in Hacienda Heights

Looks like a really busy day in Hacienda La Puente Unified Schools. Fairgrove began the day with a patriotic ceremony on the outside stage at 8:30 a.m.

Awards assemblies were held at Palm and Sunset early in the morning. Wedgeworth joined in with an awards assembly for grades 3-5 at 8:30 a.m. and grades K-2 at 1:10 p.m. Glenelder followed with an awards assembly in the cafeteria at 1:15 p.m.

Newton sponsored a Move-a-Thon on the school's blacktop from 12:26 p.m. to 2:17 p.m. to raise money.

The dance team at Workman High School will perform “You’ve Got To Move It! Move It!” in the Little Theater at 6 p.m. and 7:15 p.m.

Seniors meet at Pathfinder Park

The Pathfinder Senior Club meets 9 a.m. to noon today at Pathfinder Park, 18150 E. Pathfinder Road, Rowland Heights.

Come make new friends and play Bingo as well as other games. The club also takes trips together.

So come out and have some fun with our local senior citizens. You only have to be 55 years of age and older.

Rowland Heights Library offers free magic show

The Rowland Heights Library will offer the magic of Tony Daniels at 7 p.m. tonight.

Filled with magic and audience participation, the fun program encourages children to pick up a book and use their imagination.

College and career fair at Los Altos High School

Hacienda Heights students will get a chance to check out local colleges and careers tonight.

Los Altos High School will hold a College and Career Fair from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the gym. Students may explore the different academic choices available to them.

The teens can also look into a wide variety of careers that might interest them. Come on out and plan your future.
