Nogales Street grade separation discussed

A Community Meeting to discuss the Nogales Street Grade Separation Project will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Rowland Unified District Office at 1830 S. Nogales St.

The Alameda Corridor-East (ACE) Construction Authority will begin constructing a roadway underpass and railroad bridge at the railroad crossing on Nogales Street between San Jose Avenue and Gale Avenue/Walnut Drive North. The project will require the closure of Nogales Street between San Jose Avenue and Gale Avenue/Walnut Drive North for approximately 24 months of construction.

Before Nogales Street is closed, Gale Avenue and Walnut Drive North will be widened to two lanes in each direction near Nogales Street, portions of San Jose Avenue will be improved, and Otterbein Avenue will be improved as a temporary local detour route with railroad crossing. Upon completion of the project, traffic backups and locomotive horn noise will be sustantially reduced while the potential for collisions at the crossing will be eliminated.

The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail

Los Altos High School will offer its Fall Play: “The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail,” in the Drama Room at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday.

Glenelder Elementary in Hacienda Heights will hold a Flag Ceremony around the Flagpole at 2 p.m.

Earlier in the day, Kwis Elementary had a Veteran’s Day Assembly in the school cafeteria.

Heights honors local veterans

Thank you veterans for serving our country!

The Steinmetz Senior Center in Hacienda Heights helds an appreciation dinner for area veterans on Nov. 6.

Nearly 50 local veterans were honored at the popular event. Each received a special plaque thanking them for their service. They were treated to entertainment, dinner and dancing.

Many talked about their experiences in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Read their stories in the Hacienda Heights Highlander and Rowland Heights Highlander. A photo display is included.

Aesop’s Fables at Hacienda Library

Want to get the kids interested in reading?

Bring them to the Hacienda Heights Library tonight at 7 p.m. for Aesop’s Fables, part of the Enrichment Works Program.

The free performance will include “The tortoise and the hare;” “The boy who cried wolf;” and “The fox and the crow.”

Rowland Heights debates NFL stadium

Concerned about a new NFL stadium in Industry?

The Rowland Heights Community Coordinating Council will discuss plans to build an NFL stadium and listen to residents’ input 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10 at the Pathfinder Park Community Center, located on the corner of Pathfinder and Fullerton Roads.

John Semcken of Majestic Realty will present the company’s plans for building a stadium. After this presentation, a citizens’ group will speak about its opposition to the Canyon Residences apartment development by Trammel Crow on the site of Southland Christian School on Brea Canyon Cutoff Road.

Mt. SAC presents Fall Wind Ensemble

From old masterpieces to newly commissioned works, Interim Director Dustin Barr and the Mt. SAC Wind Ensemble offer up a rhythmic vitality touched with a quiet intensity – a virtual melting pot of sound for their Fall Wind Ensemble Concert.

The show will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 9, in the Sophia Clarke Theater at Mt. SAC.

Admission is $12 for adults $9 for seniors, students and children under 12, and $6 for Mt. SAC Students with ID.

Hacienda Heights helps City of Hope

The City of Hope Hacienda Heights Chapter has raised more than $1.3 million for the City of Hope and wants to raise even more.

The Hacienda Heights Chapter will hold its 45th annual Fashion Show, Silent Auction and Boutique from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8 at the Pacific Palms Conference Resort, 1 Industry Hills Parkway, Industry. All proceeds will benefit research and programs at the City of Hope.

This year’s fashions will be coordinated by Lucinda Mead of Couture Productions.The event theme is “Believe in Magic.”

The boutique is free and open to the public. Luncheon tickets are $65.

Support the Nogales High School Band, which is traveling to New York to march in the Macy’s Parade on Thanksgiving. Families may dine at Denny’s Restaurant at 1425 S. Nogales St., in Rowland Heights from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7.

Connecting to the future

Rowland Unified will hold its 14th annual “Connections to the Future” on Thursday, Nov. 6, at the Rowland High School gymnasium.

Jim Brazell, founder of Venture Ramp, will be the guest speaker. This group fosters partnerships between schools and the workforce. Brazell will meet with local businessman from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Senior seminar students from Nogales and Rowland High Schools can network with business and community representatives.

Seniors visit Museum of Tolerance

The Good Time Travel Club at Steinmetz Senior Center will take a trip to the Museum of Tolerance on Wednesday, Nov. 5.

The bus will leave at 10 a.m. and return by 6 p.m. from the center at 1545 S. Stimson Ave., Hacienda Heights. The cost is $24 for members and $29 for non-members, and includes transportation, a guided tour, and breakfast.
