Roar back to the ’20s at next Puente Hills Concert

The next Puente Hills Concert in the Park will feature music from the Roaring ’20s with Le Jazz Hot with Dwight Kennedy. Concerts start at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 21.

Sponsored by Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation Department and Supervisor Don Knabe, this popular series presents free musical concerts.

The concerts are a great way to spend summer evenings with family and friends. Admission and parking are free. Food, drink and desserts are available.

Rowland Unified debates virtual high school

The Rowland Unified School District is expected to make a decision Tuesday on adding a virtual high school to its campus, officials said.

iQ Academy recently proposed a charter school model, where students would take courses online, to the Rowland School Board.

An informational presentation was held at the district on July 15 to give teachers and parents the opportunity to learn more about the school.

The meeting will be held at 6:30 at the district office, 1830 Nogales Street.

Rowland Heights Library holds book sale

The Rowland Heights Library will be hold a book sale in its lobby from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

It will offer children’s fiction and non-fiction books, young adult books, adult fiction and non-fiction books, books on tape and VHS movies.

Come out and support your local library while enjoying some reading.

Roar back to the ’20s at the Homestead Museum

The Homestead Museum is hosting its “Ticket to the Twenties” festival from 4 to 8 p.m. July 18 and 19 at 15415 E. Don Julian Road.

On Saturday, there will be ukulele lessons, screenings of comedic short silent films with live musical accompaniment, live jazz music and dance lessons.

On Sunday, there will be a fashion show and costume contest, enjoy live radio plays, learn to dance the Charleston and enjoy live jazz.

There will be children’s activities including 1920s-inspired crafts on both days and a vintage car show.

Tours of the mansion and of special exhibits will also be available. Admission is free. Come in costume and bring a blanket or lawn chair.

Green your life at the Rowland Heights Library

Learn how to “green your life” with Nancy Pearlman, founder of the Ecology Center of Southern California on Saturday, July 18, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Rowland Heights Library.

Pearlman will show how to green your life — at home, at your office and on your travels. The free event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Culinary adventures in Rowland Heights

You don’t usually get T-bone steaks for your school lunch, but then this is the summer nutrition class in Rowland Unified.

The succulent steaks were only a small part of the “Iron Chef” competition that the culinary whiz kids were preparing.

The contest, held July 8 and 9, culminated the nutrition class offered by the Rowland Unified School District at Shelyn Elementary School.

See how creative nature can be on Thursday at 2 p.m. Art goes wild in the Rowland Heights Library as our animal ambassadors show off their talents to spark imagination and creativity in this interactive program.

Seating is limited, and priority will be given to children in grades k-6th. Parents and classes are allowed as space permits.

Hacienda Heights takes district championship

Congratulations to the Hacienda Heights All-Stars in winning the Little League District 60 championship on Saturday.

Power hitting elevated the Hacienda Heights All-Stars to the major division championship.

Jesse Mireles, Joey Morreale, Daniel Juarez and Leo Bentancourt each hit home runs as Hacienda Heights defeated La Puente National 10-4 at Highlander Field in Hacienda Heights.

Hacienda Heights advances to the Section 3 Tournament, which starts July 18 at Hacienda Heights.
< Morreale also turned in a solid performance on the mound and struck out 11 in five innings. "I'm very proud of my boys," Hacienda Heights manager Gary Morreale. "They played a clean game. Coordinating council meets in Rowland Heights

Rowland Heights residents are invited to attend the next meeting of the Rowland Heights Community Coordinating Council at 7 p.m. tonight in the Pathfinder Community Center. The center is located on the the corner of Pathfinder and Fullerton Roads.

The agenda includes reports from law enforcement and representatives from local elected officials, including the offices of State Assemblyman Curt Hagman, County Supervisor Don Knabe, State Senator Bob Huff, U.S. Congressman Gary Miller and County Supervisor Gloria Molina.
