It’s Be Creative Mondays at Hacienda Heights Library

It’s Be Creative Mondays at the Hacienda Heights Library at 2:30 p.m through July 27.

This program features a different art activity each week. Some of the projects planned include decorating a book bag, making a book, and decorating a Chinese Lantern.

Materials for most projects will be limited, and some projects will have an age requirement. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged.

Registration for each Monday’s activity will begin on the Friday before at 9 a.m. On the day of the program, registered participants must check in by 2:30.

After 2:30 any available spaces will be first come, first served. Please call the library for more details about the planned activity for the week.

St. Matthew’s offers children’s camps

St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church in Hacienda Heights offers children’s camps during the summer months.

Camp EDGE vacation bible camp will take place from July 13-17. It will be conducted by the Rev. Dante Simon of the First Filipino American United Methodist Church, whose congregation worships in St. Matthew’s facilities. This camp is from 6 to 9 p.m. for families and includes a potluck dinner.

During the same week, St. Matthew’s hosts an “Ooey-Gooey Science Fair” from 9 a.m. to noon for kindergarten through third grade. Director Tanya Ovalle and her assistants will teach children how to become scientists.

Participants will take home many crazy concoctions and recipes. They will also meet the “Lizard Wizard.” The cost is $20 on the start date.

The final camp is “Story Sensations” from 9 to 11 a.m. on Aug.13-17 for children in first through third grades. Director Mary Ray will lead the children in stories, choral readings, singing, dancing and playing rhythm instruments. They will also explore various art techniques.

Bicyclist hit by freight train

Every year, Rowland Unified has a workshop on railroad track safety to keep students from crossing or walking along the busy rail corridor that runs through Hacienda and Rowland Heights.

Yesterday, a bicyclist was rushed to the hospital after being struck by a freight train. Fortunately, his injuries don’t appear to be life threatening according to Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Arthur Scott.

Lt. Scott said the injured man was 35 years old and believed to be a transient, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Arthur Scott.

He was eastbound along the railroad tracks when he saw the train approaching eastbound and apparently decided to try to beat it across a bridge, Scott said.

Be creative with music at Rowland Heights Library

The Rowland Heights Library is offering a Creativity Music Workshop on Saturdays this summer.

Beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, Joe Son and Sean Lee will introduce children to the evolution of western classic music.

The music program runs every Saturday through Aug. 22. The musical appreciation classes are aimed at young children ages 5 to 9.

The program is limited to 20 children. Sign-up at the reference desk.

Party puppet show at Rowland Heights Library

Looking for a Party Puppet Show?

The Rowland Heights Library will host a “The Party Puppet Show” on Thursday at 2 p.m. The music variety show encourages children to use their imagination. Join the party puppets in an interactive exploration of music and fun.

Seating is limited, and priority will be given to children in grades K-6th. Parents and classes are allowed as space permits.

Spin the wheel for prizes at Hacienda Heights Library

The Hacienda Heights Library will sponsor a wheel of fortune on Wednesday, July 8, at 3 p.m. Kids 3 years of age and up will get the chance to spin the big wheel and win a prize.

The popular event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Hacienda Heights seniors visit El Cajon casino

Friends of the Steinmetz Senior Center will visit Sycuan Casino in El Cajon on Tuesday, July 7.

The cost is $22 per person, including transportation and a $20 cash voucher. The bus leaves at 8 a.m. and returns at 5 p.m.
