Sheriff’s and police stations throughout the area hosted members of their local communities Tuesday during “National Night Out.”

With the goal of fighting crime and drug abuse, National Night Out events have been taking place for 27 years, Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials said.

Nearly every sheriff’s station and local police station held some sort of event.

In Walnut, residents celebrated with family picnics, “ice skating,” a bounce house and live music by the Motown band Stone Soul.

In Rowland and Hacienda Heights, Sheriff’s deputies planned an event in conjunction with the Puente Hills Concerts in the Park. They displayed bicycle and motorcycle units as well as the Walnut Sheriff’s Station Mobile Command Post.

Through the events, neighbors were urged to keep a good relationship with local law enforcement officials and be vigilant to potential problems in their communities.

Residents were also encouraged to keep their porch lights on during the evening and engage in conversation with neighbors about crime prevention.

According to organizers, the program is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support and participation for local crime-fighting programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and partnerships and send a message to criminals that crime is not tolerated.

National Night Out is celebrated in all 50 U.S. states and territories, Canada and U.S. military bases around the world.

It’s estimated that more than 35 million people joined in worldwide.

Although the bulk of National Night Out events took place Tuesday evening, a few others are yet to come.

Diamond Bar will hold its National Night Out tonight at 6 p.m., in conjunction with its concert in the park, at Sycamore Park, 22930 Golden Springs Drive.
