South Pointe students remember 9/11 in Walnut

Wearing patriotic colored clothing, South Pointe Middle School students and staff were joined by Walnut firefighters Tom Fahrny and Jim Berklite from Station #119 to remember the “defining moment in our nation,” said Principal Susan Arzola.

After the flag salute, 7th grader Ariana Gonzales sung the National Anthem, then the group of over 1,000 stood in reflection for a moment of silence.

“Heroes were born that day. And from that tragedy our nation grew stronger. Today’s program makes September 11 an important day in our own history,” Arzola said.

Still time to march in the big Buckboard Parade in Rowland Heights

Deadlines to participate in the 39th Annual Buckboard Parade is fast approaching. All community groups who want to march in the big parade must apply by Sept. 23!

The Buckboard Days Parade Committee consists of the by the Rowland Heights Chinese Association and the Rowland Heights Community Coordinating Council.

The parade will conclude at Rowland Heights County Park with a community festival organized by the Rowland Council PTA and the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation.

Parade awards will be announced during the festival. The theme of this year’s parade is: “Rowland Heights: the Best Community for Kids”.

CalTrans closing 60 Freeway nightly for repairs

Beginning tonight and continuing nightly through Sunday, the California Department of Transportation will close portions of the 60 Freeway to make pavement repairs.

The closures between the 57 Freeway in Diamond Bar and the 71 Freeway in Pomona will occur from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Westbound 60 Freeway:

Up to three lanes and the carpool lane from Phillips Ranch Road to Reservoir Street

Old Brea Canyon Road off-ramp

Eastbound SR-60:

Up to three lanes from Diamond Bar Boulevard to the 71 Freeway

Old Brea Canyon Road on- and off-ramps

Diamond Bar Boulevard on-ramp

Phillips Ranch Road on- and off-ramps

Garey Avenue on- and off-ramps

Diamond Bar Boulevard on-ramp

Reservoir Street on- and off ramps

Homestead Museum offers Ticket to the Twenties

Hacienda and Rowland Heights residents can learn the Charleston. Watch movies featuring silent film stars Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford.

The Workman and Temple Family Homestead Museum is your “Ticket to the Twenties” on Saturday and Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. each day.

There is no cost for admission. Guests are encouraged to dress in Roaring Twenties attire and bring along a lawn chair and a blanket.

Dance demonstrations will be provided by Hollywood Hotshots. On Saturday, musical groups Dean Mora and His Modern Rhythmists and Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys will perform. Natalie Meyer will coordinate a fashion show and a 1920s movie star look-alike contest. On Sunday, Ian Whitcomb and His Dance Band as well as Night Blooming Jazzmen will perform. The Art Deco Society of Los Angeles will put on the fashion show. And Chuck Kovacic will portray Will Rogers.

The event includes vintage house tours, a ukulele sing-a-long, crafts, games and food. Dogs and alcohol are prohibited.

The museum is located at 15415 East Don Julian Road, city of Industry. To reach the museum, take the Pomona (60) Freeway and exit Hacienda Boulevard and drive north about one mile. Parking is free.
