Search called off for Rowland Heights swimmer

A search was called off Monday for a 34-year-old Rowland Heights man who entered the water at Dana Point’s Salt Creek Beach Sunday afternoon and recovery efforts are now under way, Orange County officials said Tuesday.

Witnesses said the man, identified by authorities as Frank Daniel Austin, went into the water at 4 p.m. Sunday but he wasn’t reported missing until about 7:20 p.m that night, said Gale Krause, an Orange County Sheriff’s spokeswoman.

“It’s (now) a recovery effort,” Krause said. “We had a lot of resources on it over the weekend; that’s been scaled back.”

The water was too rough for the Sheriff’s dive team to go in Sunday or Monday she said.

However, the sheriff’s Harbor Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard has been searching for Austin with boats and the coast guard had a helicopter out there as well, Krause said.

About 20 lifeguards also participated in the search, she said.
