Game report: Coyotes 4, Kings 1

Key play: Arizona Coyotes defenseman Zbynek Michalek launched a harmless-looking shot from the right point 2 minutes into Friday’s game against the Kings at Staples Center. The puck struck a defender’s stick (maybe Nick Shore pressuring the point?) and fluttered past Jonathan Quick, propelling the Coyotes to an early lead en route to a commanding 4-1 victory.

Pivotal performer: Quick fought the puck from the start, giving up four goals on 10 shots.

League firsts: The Kings’ Jordan Weal and the Coyotes’ Max Domi made their NHL debuts. Weal didn’t play in the season-opening game Wednesday. Domi, the son of former NHL player Tie Domi, scored the Coyotes’ third goal and assisted on their second.

Roster move: The Kings signed goalie Peter Budaj to a one-season contract. He is assigned to their AHL team in Ontario, which begins play in the new Pacific Division on Saturday in Bakersfield.

Up next: The Kings’ season-opening five-game homestand continues Tuesday, when the Vancouver Canucks visit Staples Center.
