Ducks place Anton Khudobin on waivers, first step in resolving goalie situation

The Ducks placed Anton Khudobin on waivers Monday, making the first move toward resolving their glut of goaltenders. If he isn’t claimed by another team by Tuesday morning, then the Ducks are expected to send him to the San Diego Gulls of the American Hockey League. Frederik Andersen and John Gibson would then compete for the starter’s job with the Ducks.

The Ducks could receive $950,000 in salary-cap relief if Khudobin is unclaimed and sent to San Diego, according to the General Fanager website. Khudobin’s cap hit is $2.25 million for 2015-16, the last season of a contract he signed with the Carolina Hurricanes. The Ducks acquired Khudobin from the Hurricanes for defenseman James Wisniewski last June 27.

Khudobin, 29, is 3-3-0 with a 2.70 goals-against average for the Ducks.
