Ducks center Rickard Rakell talks about returning to the lineup

Ducks center Rickard Rakell returned to the lineup after sitting out for three games because of an upper-body injury. When he returned, he had new linemates during the Ducks’ 4-3 overtime loss Wednesday to the Edmonton Oilers. Rakell played left wing and joined center Ryan Getzlaf and right wing Corey Perry for the first time to form a very effective line. Perry scored two goals Rakell assisted on each.

“I felt pretty good,” Rakell said. “I felt really comfortable from the start. I was excited to play with ‘Getzy’ and ‘Pears.’ I thought the first period we had some good scoring chances. We could have easily had a few more. I had never played with them before. I was just excited, just not trying to change anything from what I do out there, just trying to be open and create chances.”

Ducks center Rickard Rakell’s participation vs. the Oilers is a game-time decision, coach Bruce Boudreau says

Rickard Rakell looked and sounded like a man who couldn’t wait to get back onto the ice, return to the lineup and try to get the Ducks back on the winning track Wednesday at the Honda Center. He sat out three games because of an upper-body injury and that was two too many, as far as he was concerned.

It looked after the morning skate as if Rakell would be in the lineup. Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said Rakell’s participation in the evening’s game against the Edmonton Oilers would be a game-time decision, however.

“I feel good,” Rakell said in the first of several short and to the point exchanges with reporters before the Ducks faced the Connor McDavid-less Oilers. “I felt good yesterday and today was a good day, too. We’ll see what the coaches say. I feel good. I feel really good.”

Rakell was injured on a first-period hit in the Ducks’ victory Nov. 4 over the Florida Panthers. He scored two goals and four points in 12 games before he was hurt on a check from the Panthers’ Alex Petrovic.

Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf back in lineup for Friday’s game against Blue Jackets

One center returned to the Ducks’ lineup but another was sidelined for their game Friday against the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Honda Center. Ryan Getzlaf played for the first time since undergoing an appendectomy Oct. 28; Rickard Rakell sat out because of an upper-body injury.

One of these days, or nights, the Ducks will be whole again.

Friday was not that night, however.

Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau offered no update on Rakell, other than to say he was day-to-day.

Getzlaf, the Ducks’ top-line center, rejoined a Ducks lineup that won two in a row going into Friday and played significantly better than when he left it the day after a 1-0 overtime loss Oct. 26 to the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks.

The Ducks were 2-2-0 in four games without their leading scorer the past three seasons.

“I think, when you’re talking about a whole season, you’ve got to go through some bumps and bruises,” Getzlaf said. “I’ve been through these things in a season, but it doesn’t seem the same when you start out this way. We’ve got to work through it. We’ll be better for it in the long run.”

Game report: Ducks 4, Predators 2

Key play: Andrew Cogliano and Sami Vatanen scored 12 second apart during a frenetic first period, propelling the Ducks to a 3-0 lead and an eventual 4-2 victory Sunday over the Nashville Predators at the Honda Center. The Ducks’ victory was only their second in 11 games and ended a five-game losing streak.

Pivotal performers: Rickard Rakell centered a productive line with Jiri Sekac and Chris Stewart on his wings. Rakell scored the Ducks’ first goal only 1:11 into the game and later added an assist. Sekac had an assist and Stewart had a break-out game with a goal and two assists.

Injury update: Sekac left the game with a lower-body injury. Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf sat out for the third consecutive game after undergoing a non-emergency appendectomy Wednesday. Defenseman Simon Despres remains sidelined by a head injury.

Quote, unquote: “It’s OK as long as we don’t think that’s the be-all and end-all,” Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. “We have to build on it. We have to put things together. The next game we play is going to be just as tough. Florida beat us pretty good last year. It’s not going to be easy.”

Between the pipes: Ducks goaltender Frederik Andersen made his fifth consecutive start and won his first game of the season with a 40-save performance. Nashville’s Carter Hutton started in place of Pekka Rinne, who played in the Predators’ 4-3 overtime loss Saturday to the Kings.

Up next: The Ducks play host to the Florida Panthers on Wednesday, the second game on a three-game homestand.
