Afternoon blend: Tom Cruise re-emerges...Borat is a daddy, and Longoria's got new billing...

.tomcruise.jpgTOM CRUISE has been far more low-profile than during his couch jumping days - especially since the failure of his last film: "Mission Impossible 3" which seemed to send the message that his sometimes bizarre off-screen persona had finally begun to affect ticket sales. But Cruise has been quietly rehabing his image and now has a new film, "Lions for Lambs" coming out. He is pictured above at a premiere in New York last night. Unlike most Cruise big-budget action pics of recent years, this has him third-billed behind Robert Redford and Meryl Streep and should remind moviegoers that in addition to being a big star, Cruise is a very good actor and a three-time Academy Award nominee ...Here's something to file under the catregory of 'Who the hell asked you anyway?' A Manhattan-based therapist is saying that all the moving around being done by BRAD PITT and ANGELINA JOLIE will be detrimental to their four children, especially the adopted ones. Yeah, we can see how well all those Beverly Hills-raised celebs have turned out ....Congratulations are in order to actress ISLA FISHER and SACHA BARON COHEN who are now the proud parents of a little girl ... I haven't been able to watch any of "Private Practice" so far this season but I'll get plenty chances since ABC announced today that it has ordered a fuill season worth of episodes of this "Grey's Anatomy" spinoff ...
.eva.jpgE! Online, which I love, seems to think it got some big scoop by posting that EVA LONGORIA'S "Desperate Housewives" credit will now read Eva Longoria Parker, adding her husband's last name. Those of uis who watch the show already know that the name change has already been effect for the first three episodes of the season...

Michael Douglas' son faces trial on drug charges...

.cameron2.jpgCAMERON DOUGLAS, the troubled 29-year-old son of MICHAEL DOUGLAS and grandson of KIRK DOUGLAS, has been ordered to stand trial on cocaine possession charges from an arrest this summer. He appeared in the movie "It Runs in the Family" (pictured below) with his Oscar-winning dad and movie icon grandad. He also had leads in the films "Adam & Eve" and "Loaded."
I'm sure it is just so difficult to be the son and grandson of Hollywood royalty.
My heart bleeds.

Friday Morning Buzz: Britney runs over someone's foot! Beckham is back! David Copperfield accused of rape!

.brit.jpgOops! She did it again. BRITNEY SPEARS, now driving legally, ran over a photographer's foot yesterday! Now that wasn't very nice. But, it was an accident and police were not contacted. But the real news is, if you care, apparently Britney's parental rights are going to be re-instated before the nexf court hearing ... DAVID BECKHAM is back in action for the LA Galaxy after missing 10 games due to injury. But the soccer stud and hubby of POSH SPICE admits that fitness level isn't the best: Obviously I'm not completely match fit yet, but I hope to get on and play a little, which will help my fitness. The team have been absolutely brilliant lately, winning five games in a row, so I know it'll be a challenge to get back into the starting eleven." I just love the way the Brits say "brilliant." ...
.becks.jpg ... OK, this is probably the lead item but I buried it because in LA, Brt and Becks take precedence. But magician DAVID COPPERFIELD has been accused of rape by a Seattle woman ... Also in trouble is singer AMY WINEHOUSE who has been arrested on drug charges.
...and just in case you were wondering - God knows i was - LINDSAY LOHAN is NOT engaged so everyone can stop checking their mailboxes for a wedding invite!

More updates throughout the morning to come!

Elizabeth Perkins loves playing "out of her mind" character on "Weeds"

.weeds4.jpg
.weeds2.jpgElizabeth Perkins isn't just funny on television. When I asked her this week how things were going on her hot comedy show "Weeds," she said casually: “Well, you know, we’re puffing away.” Perkins has loved playing the controlling, manipulative and image obsessed Celia Hodes for the last three seasons, earning two Emmy nominations along the way.
But that doesn’t mean she likes Celia, the PTA president who cheats on her husband, doesn’t like her daughter and failed to get much sympathy even when she battled breast cancer.
“I think she’s a complete horror show, she’s completely out of her mind but in a really great way for an actress anyway,” Perkins said this week. “But I think there’s parts of her that ring very true. The thing I love about ‘Weeds’ is that it’s very stylized, everything is amped up to 100 degrees. But if you just sort of pare it down and just get it back to the basics, it’s very real.”
The role of Celia marks the first series for Perkins who rose to movie stardom in “Big” opposite Tom Hanks and followed that up with such roles as Demi Moore’s angry best friend in “About Last Night” and as Wilma in the “The Flintstones.”
“Weeds” has provided her with a welcome return to those early comic roles.
“I don’t think people think of me as doing comedy and yet I’ve done so much comedy so it’s nice to be able to remind people every week that I can be funny...and that I will do full-frontal nudity on television.”
So, Is she surprised that the show has remained so popular?
Perkins: “I don’t know because it’s about marijuana.”
