Surf Cat back on track
One of the best, most versatile horses in training in 2006, Surf Cat, is back on the track and will begin training again in February. Surf Cat, who won three Grade II races last year before pulling up sore and taking the rest of the year off, was on the track both Friday and Monday mornings for trainer Bruce Headley along with stablemate Arson Squad.
Surf Cat won the San Carlos and Portero Grande during the Santa Anita winter meet and then took the Mervyn LeRoy Handicap at Hollywood Park in May before being sidelined. Surf Cat is now 5 and will probably be pointed toward the Hollywood Gold Cup in July. He has shown a fondness for the Inglewood oval in the past, winning the 1 1/8-mile Swaps Stakes as a 3-year-old in 2005.
"He pulled up a little sore, that's all," Headley told the Daily Racing Form when asked about Surf Cat's layoff. "There were no fractures or anything."
Let's hope Surf Cat does get back to the races and displays the form he showed as a 3- and 4-year-old.
Surf Cat has won 7 of 11 lifetime starts and earned $562,420.
