Give filly a shot

| | Comments (0) |

Street Sense won the Kentucky Derby with a dream trip over a Churchill Downs racing surface he obviously loves. Curlin, still lightly raced with only five career starts under his belt, came back and ran the Derby champ down in the stretch to win the Preakness by a head.

Street Sense is considered doubtful for the Belmont Stakes on June 9, and Curlin and Hard Spun are both considered probable for the 1 1/2-mile endurance test. Trainer Todd Pletcher has been talking about perhaps taking a shot with the talented filly Rags to Riches, who is 4 for 4 in 2007 after winning the Kentucky Oaks. I say go for it. Pletcher just may have a sophomore star good enough to become only the third filly and the first since Tanya in 1905 to win the Belmont. Only 21 have tried, the last being Silverbulletday in 1999. The Bob Baffert-trained Silverbulletday finished seventh after vying for the lead much of the way with Charismatic.
