Looks like seven in Gold Cup

| | Comments (0) |

A week away from the $750,000 Grade I Hollywood Gold Cup, it looks like seven will go postward, including Lava Man, who will seek to match Native Diver's record of three consecutive Gold Cup victories. Molengao (pictured), trained by the torrid Paulo Lobo, appears to be the main threat. Lobo had won with 10 of 26 starters at the Hollypark meet heading into action Friday night.

An interesting sidelight to the Gold Cup is the fact that Lava Man has never raced over a synthetic surface like he will next Saturday on Hollywood Park's Cushion Track. Of course, the 6-year-old gelding figures to enjoy the surface. Word is that turf horses love the Cushion Track, and there are some who believe that Lava Man is now a better grass runner. We'll see soon enough.
