Super High 5 carryover at Santa Anita
There is a $274,952 Super High 5 carryover at Santa Anita today. The exotic wager, in its first year of existence, requires bettors to select the first five finishers in the day's final race in their exact order. It's a $1 minimum bet, and you can wager as many combinations as you like. This is the biggest pool yet for the Super High 5, and though I don't play it myself, there are a couple of horses in the eighth race that I would recommend including if you want to take a shot.
I think Warren's Scooter is the horse to beat, but I believe Scotty Jones has a huge chance to win the race. I'd make sure I had those two somewhere in my sequence, along with outsider Dee's Fling for trainer Jay Robbins. He's dropping and gets the services of David Flores, who is enjoying a strong meet.
Other horses to watch today:
First -- Whatwerewethinking drops to the basement and will be hard to deny. Secret Flame is a long-shot special.
Second -- Gandolf looks primed for a top effort for trainer Jason Orman and leading rider Garrett Gomez. Last time he ran for a maiden tag, he finished second in April 2007 at Santa Anita. He's had 14 chances, and it says here No. 15 will be the charm.
Third -- Tox Dee Bee comes back in five days for Roger Stein and Rafael Bejarano stays aboard. Two strong selling points for a horse that was overmatched in his last but can run with these. Also, Corvinus has a shot at a nice price.
Fourth -- I Like Blackhawks and Ricky El Corredor are my plays here. Alex Solis and trainer Caesar Dominguez team up on Ricky El Corredor, and that pair has been explosive in the past.
Fifth -- Stick with the hot hand. Michael Baze has been hot of late, and he rides Almacita in this spot for Mike Mitchell. They might wind up in the winner's circle.
Sixth -- Haggis Macpherson is the most probable winner on today's card, but be careful. Don't take too short a price on a guy who's dropping from a $100,000 maiden claimer, where he finished a close-up third, to $32,000. Still, like I stated Monday, Aaron Gryder and Brian Koriner are tough when they team up. Der Van is an interesting play.
Seventh -- General Bueno could connect here with a patient ride by Jon Court.
