Horsing around out at Santa Anita
It seems like we just started this winter-spring meet at Santa Anita, but with the start of the race week today, there are only seven more weeks to go. It's not the greatest of cards today, but one that offers a few plays that could turn out handsomely. Take the fifth race, with Ymustichasethecat, who is going up a notch in class but comes in off a third-place effort in which he closed ground in the stretch. The 4-year-old gelding, trained by Peter Eurton, retains the services of Chantal Sutherland, who got to know him in his last start. Ymustichasethecat is 10-1 on the morning line and is worth an across-the-board wager at those odds. I like a horse that just ran well and is being stepped up in class. It's a sign that the connections think the horse is sharp and ready to win.
Some other horses to watch today --
First -- Unbridled Penny drops into a maiden claimer and is sitting on a score, and the lightly raced City Heat is dangerous in here as well. Two good key horses to use in a daily double or an early pick four.
Second -- Cathrine's Hope has been facing much better of late and has won down the hill before, which is very important on Santa Anita's unique downhill turf course. Stormin Mon bears watching.
Third -- Aggressive is the horse to beat here, but he's 7-5 on the morning line. Moon Mission is the price play.
Sixth -- Good spot for a four-horse exacta box -- Presidential Cause, Akebono, Brenin Gwalia and Kingdom Come. Akebono, at 20-1 on the morning line, is a great price play.
Seventh -- Bruce Headley has another nice one in Street Boss, but he's the 5-2 morning-line favorite. For a price, let's try Bobby Frankel's Temecula Creek. Save is another who could find the winner's circle at a nice price.
Eighth -- Dancewiththedevil would be a great play if the renovated synthetic track was more speed favoring, but it's hardly been kind to speed horses lately and the 3-year-old gelding has the capability to gun from the rail and be tough to catch. He's 12-1 on the morning line, but play this one with caution. If you're ahead for the day when the nightcap arrives, maybe take a stab here.
