They should have seen this coming
OK, what's wrong with this scenario -- Santa Anita gets a new racing surface that has only been used for training tracks, there is no manual on what to do if something goes wrong and the weather is about to change?
Well, if I were the folks at Santa Anita or I had a stake in Pro-Ride, I would have insisted that Ian Pearse, the founder of the company, was here for the first two weeks of the meet to ensure nothing went wrong. They had to feel there was a good chance something might happen, or could happen, with temperatures dropping from the 90s the last time they raced here to the 50s, 40s and even 30s when the winter meet began.
These synthetic tracks are all still in their infancy. We're learning about them as we go along, and we're now discovering that worst-case scenarios must be anticipated to stay ahead of the curve. I mean, am I the only one here who thinks some of this mess could have been avoided with better foresight?
