Road to the Kentucky Derby continues today

| | Comments (5) |

It's a big afternoon for colts like Pioneer of the Nile (San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita) and Friesan Fire and Papa Clem in the Louisiana Derby at the Fair Grounds.
I'm a participant in the Paulick Report Kentucky Derby top 10, and here was the latest ballot I submitted this past Monday:

1. The Pamplemousse
2. Old Fashioned
3. Pioneerof the Nile
4. Dunkirk
5. I Want Revenge
6. Quality Road
7. Papa Clem
8. Imperial Council
9. Friesan Fire
10. Desert Party

The Paulick report has got some good stuff on its site, so check it out at www.paulickreport.com. Also, Equidaily (www.equidaily.com) is a good source for horse racing information.

Chrystal,
There are a lot of respected analysts who think Old Fashioned is the real deal and the horse to beat in the Derby. One big factor in his favor -- he's proven he can race on dirt, which Pioneerof the Nile and The Pamplemousse have yet to do.

Patrick,
Yes, she looked very nice in winning the Oaks at Fair Grounds eased up under Calvin Borel. It's my understanding the owners didn't nominate her to the Derby when they had the chance because they didn't want to be tempted to run her against the boys on May 2. Now they're having second thoughts, and she could still be supplemented for $6,000. It will be interesting to see what the connections do. Myself, I'd pay the $6,000 by the March 28 deadline and make her eligible for the Triple Crown races but keep her against the fillies in the Kentucky Oaks. They can always run her against the boys later on, i.e. Rags to Riches in the 2007 Belmont. But only three fillies have won the Derby, so if you think she has a realistic shot to do it, it has to be tempting to go for it.
