Jockeys set for second season on Animal Planet

| | Comments (27) |

Good news for those who enjoyed the premiere season of the docu-drama "Jockeys" -- the second season will debut on Aug. 21 with two new riders -- two-time Eclipse Award winner Garrett Gomez and Corey Nakatani -- joining the original six of Mike Smith, Alex Solis, Joe Talamo, Aaron Gryder, Chantal Sutherland and Kayla Stra.

The show will increase from 30 minutes to an hour this season and include new storylines outlined by Animal Planet:

Gomez -- Viewers discover how well-respected this guy is because of the way he's battled back from the depths of despair to the pinnacle of the profession. He's first class all the way.

Nakatani -- Known for his short fuse and fierce competitiveness, he's featuerd prominently on the first episode, which airs at 10 p.m.

Smith -- We'll learn more about his exploits aboard the super mare Zenyatta and also find out how his girlfriend's (Sutherland) decision to move back to Woodbine Park in Toronto affects their relationship.

Solis -- The roller-coaster ride that was The Pamplemousse's 3-year-old season is showcased as the veteran native of Panama hopes to ride his first Kentucky Derby winner.

Talamo -- Only 19 and already approaching the top of his profession, "Smokin' Joe" hopes that I Want Revenge can lead him to the winner's circle at Churchill Downs.

Gryder -- Always in search of his signature mount, Gryder travels across the globe to ride Well Armed in the $6 million Dubai World Cup. Finally, he's found that horse he hopes puts him on the map as a rider.

Sutherland -- The best female jockey since Julie Krone wants to win the Kentucky Derby and ride some live Breeders' Cup horses. Will her decision to return to Woodbine Park in search of those goals adversely affect her relationship with Smith?

Stra -- The Australian native continues to get precious few mounts, most of which go postward at boxcar odds. Is she tough enough, possess the needed patience to stick it out?

The first season was very enjoyable, and we can only hope the encore is as good if not better. We'll find out beginning Aug. 21.

It was a very enjoyable show but I'd like the see the appearances and "insight" of the gambler, "Jimmie The Hat" go away as well as the "redone" race calls by Trevor Denman with the jockeys names inserted in the call. That was a bit irritating to say the least. But a good show and I'm happy to see it return. Horse Racing needs stuff like this.

ING,
I wasn't a big fan of the fake Trevor calls myself ... I think they could do without those and still make it a very entertaining show. And you're right, horse racing needs more of these types of things to help market the sport.

How is Sutherland the best female rider since Julie? It is an insult to Rosemary Homeister and Emma Wilson and many others. She is an average rider, beautiful woman, but would she ever even exist in Ca without dating Mike Smith? Give us a break.

Art Wilson Author Profile Page said:

Hmm, I don't think I insulted anyone with my comment, but you sure did by inferring that Sutherland would never have ridden in CA without dating Mike Smith. If you know anything about the sport, you know trainers and owners don't put jockeys on their horses based on who they do or don't date. It's too competitive a game for that nonsense. The stats? Sutherland, while riding at major tracks like Santa Anita and Woodbine, has won $3.4 million in purses this year -- 29th best in North America. I never inferred that Rosemary and Emma were not capable riders and couldn't compete on larger circuits if given the chance. But right now they are 69th and 71st, respectively, on the list with $1.9 million in earnings. Emma Wilson has won 21 less races than Chantal at Woodbine. I don't think I'm alone in my belief, but you're certainly entitled to your own.

Yo Racing Fan..I read that too, and what the he**. Hay I am a Huge follower of "The Rose" and that "Emma". They can horseback, any time, anywhere. Chantel Sutherland came to SantaAnita with MINETHATBIRD and I wagered on them , wasn't going to miss an opportunity at 30/1,They are a GREAT TEAM they put up a good race in the BC JUVIE, I think the weather, air and rigors simply caught up with the LITTLE BROWN HORSE that can. I think Sutherland should have ridden that horse in the KY Derby, the Triple Crown....Maybe we would have had a TC Winner. Those two together fit like a glove. MSmith and CSutherland may be a couple , however they are putting their CAREER'S first.I personally feel she should put her career first. And ING, I think the TREVOR do overs were for the FIRST TIME viewers just watching this show and learning about HORSE RACING , I didn't mind it......I go to the local OTB and it should be used for the Chronic Gambler with a lousy attitude toward life in General who simply plays numbers and still bi***es , when asking for the umpteenth time, was that the 3 horse, blah blah :):):)
Looking forward to the next show with CNOK and GOGO. They should do a story line on a jockey at a BUSH track, I have one in mind, Clyde Henry Smith Jr, whom happens to be and OklahomanBredAmericanBlackMan.He is facing some brick walls..............

Who the hell is Emma and Rosemary? LOL

Rosemary has won the Eclipse Award for leading apprentice I think in 93. The first woman to ever win an Eclipse, not even Julie did that. She has been leading rider in NJ, Fla, and currently leads Colonial. She rode in the Kentucky Derby with a legit shot. I am a racing person, my husband is a jockey, I was a jockey, my granfather was a jockey, all hightly ranked too. Just saying, we are definatley jumping the gun with Chantal, maybe some day she will get to the point where she is that amazing. Just not yet. When she was winning Soverns in Canada she was married to the leading trainer,Mike Wright Jr anyone know that? I just think for all the woman that are out there, they are doing amazing year after year and go unnoticed. Rosemary especially is putting up the numbers and just hasnt jumped to Ca, but you shouldnt count her out.

racing fan said:

Oh yeah, Emma Jayne Wilson:

Won an eclipse, two sovereign awards, leading rider at Woodbine, the next year 2nd, won the Queen's Plate (the Canadian Kentucky Derby) in one of the slickest rides ever, ridden in Hong Kong, Royal Ascot, and is already in the Canadian Hall of Fame even though she isnt retired. She rode one winter at Fair Grounds where no woman has ever even got a look and did amazing. She has only been riding for four years.

Chantel, the best since Julie? Umm, no.

Trevor's "calls" ruin a very good show.

chasham said:

Contributor Art Wilson should learn the difference between "imply" and "infer", and "implied" and "inferred"! The misuse of the word "infer" ruins any sense that your post might otherwise convey!

chasham said:

Any discussion about the best female jockeys should include Inez Karlson, now riding at Arlington Park after a hugely successful Hawthorne meet!

Art Wilson Author Profile Page said:

Chasham,
Funny, my dictionary defines "infer" this way: "to hint; imply; or suggest." Perhaps I should have used the word "suggest." Because she was certainly "suggesting" that Chantal could not have ridden in SoCal without the help of dating Mike Smith, and that's absurd. All that does is unfairly detract from what Chantal has accomplished.

racing fan said:

Oh boy, I always say things too hard. By saying that about Mike my point gets lost. My point is that people are making a MAJOR leap comparing her to Julie Krone. I checked and Emma Wilson was leading rider twice at Woodbine, I was wrong. What I am saying, Chantal is an average rider compared to guys. She is good compared to girls. Thats it. This is coming from an x-jockey, female jockey, and also one of the biggest fans of female riders, my daughter hopes to be one. That being said, when Julie rode she OUTRODE the big boys, the ones that are going to go down as the best ever. Chantal has won approx 450 races lifetime. She has never been leading rider at any track. Yes she is on the rise, yes she is getting better, but is she Julie Krone, no way. She is the first Chantal Sutherland, shes interesting and fun to watch, but keep it real.

Art Wilson Author Profile Page said:

Racing,
If you go back and read, I think you'll see I never said she was as good as Julie Krone. Julie is the only female rider to win a Breeders' Cup race. She set the bar and it's up to others, Chantal, Emma and others to try to equal and/or pass it. So far, nobody has even approached it.

racing fan said:

No, but you said she is the best since Julie. I am taking your meaning as Chantal is better than all other females riders except Julie.

ING said:

I can see the bull ring and bush track crowds are all alive and well in America.

Art Wilson Author Profile Page said:

Racing,
Correct. But in your previous post you wrote something about female jockeys being compared to Julie, who in my opinion and many others is the best female jockey ever, bar none. I never compared Sutherland to Julie, just said Chantal is the best since Julie. In my opinion, I believe she is. The fact she is 29th on the earnings list right now, far better than any other female jockey, speaks for itself. I respect your opinion about the other female riders, I just don't agree.

ING said:

Hey, since we are slinging the hash how about Maggie Carter who rides at Los Alamitos! Let's not forget her! Also, Tabitha Morrison who rode for awhile around these parts until the Stews invited her in to the tape room and asked her not to come back until she could keep her horses straight.

racing fan said:

Any hall of fame athlete has up and down years. Chantal Sutherland cannot be placed above riders for leading the other riders for one year, or even a few years. Even Tiger Woods gets beat. OVERALL Emma Wilsonn's career has towered over Chantal. I see Joel Rosario is 5th and Mike Smith is and Mike Smith is 20th, so I guess Joel is better.

Guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

I really enjoyed the show and didn't get bothered by trevor's fake calls or the obvious editing or even jimy the hat--to me it helped who we might want to be helping understand-people who see the show but know nothing about horse racing...for them the editing and jimmy the hat and trevor probably helped to understand what was going on.........for me the exposure for horse racing, the oppty to see any extra Zenyatta, to see Ellis who has some horses i adore Rail Trip and Dewey's Special especially(and his tenga cat -close on that name--looked real good yesterday) and then some people i know in the crowd shots was just wonderful.

I enjoyed the show. Any minor factors that might have irritated the seasoned fans were far overshadwoed by the overall quality of the show. I enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to the second season.

I too enjoy the show, but as others have stated some things I could do without, sick of the vitriolic b.s. that is Corey Nakatani, the soap opera that is Mike n Chantal, the distracting fake racecalls! I have followed both seasons but am hoping they change the venue next season How bout Churchill,Belmont,Saratoga? Gimme' some Johnny 'V',Borel,Leparoux,Desourmoux, and one of my all time faves,Edgar Prado.

An interesting show but needs loads of improvement. Yes, racing needs a show like this, yes, it exposes the mainstream public to it and yes it may attract a new fan base but the Hollywood types do a bit of a disservice to the industry with the drama and all. Horseracing has been the most prestigious and roughest sport in the world for hundreds of years. They should cover the many tracks across the country and incorporate a little more depth when covering these fine athletes. Jockeys are the most undervalued sports figures in the business and it's unfortunate they don't get the glorification your mainstream athletes do. I mean, sure the horse will always be first but they don't win races on their own.
