Who would win — Rachel or Zenyatta?

OK, say the two camps got together and a special race, at 1 1/8 miles, was set up to include both Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta in an eight-horse field at Churchill Downs.

Who do you think would win?

Would Rachel’s superior early speed, which enables the Medaglia d’Oro filly to take her opponents gate to wire or lay just off the pace, be too much for Zenyatta to overcome?

Or, is Zenyatta just too good for her younger foe? Zenyatta has closed to win all 12 of her career races no matter how fast or slow the early pace. Would she add Rachel Alexandra to her list of conquests?

What do you think?

  1. C’mon isn’t this subject beat to death enough. there is real racing w/ real head to head matchups that are always unique and interesting going on. Journalists are non-fiction writers why deal w/ this fantasy.

  2. anon em ous — if you are not the least bit curious who would win if these two distaffers raced, you’re in the minority. You can get the nuts and bolts in the charts. Topical issues are interesting to discuss, and there are no horses in America today that are more popular than Rachel and Zenyatta.

  3. What’s so ironic is that Zenyatta might be a better horse on dirt than synthetics. One of her best races ever was in the 2008 Apple Blossom at Oaklawn Park when she blew away a pretty nice field by three-plus lengths with a really powerful stretch charge. Of course, thanks to the powers that be, we’ll never know how great she could have been on dirt.

  4. Hey, anon em ous are you kidding me? While a matchup of Rachel and Zen isn’t going to happen (You are right) I can’t believe you aren’t interested in who would win between these two great ladies!
