Santa Anita announces five George Woolf finalists

The five finalists for the 2010 George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award include Calvin Borel, Garrett Gomez, Randall Meier, Gallyn Mitchell and DeShawn Parker, Santa Anita announced Wednesday. The winner, chosen by a vote of their peers, will be announced in January.

Presented annually since 1950, the Woolf is recognized as one of the most prestigious awards in thoroughbred racing. The candidates are judged by their careers and personal character. The winner’s trophy is a replica of the life-size statue of Woolf that sits in Santa Anita’s paddock garden.

Woolf died following a spill at Santa Anita on Jan. 13, 1946. He was regarded as one of the country’s top jocks and was known as “The Iceman.” He was recognized by his peers and media members for being a tough competitor and true professional.

  1. Randy MEIER EPITOMISES WHAT A CLEAN CUT HARD WORKING ATHELETE SHOULD BE .a TRUE GENTLEMAN AND A MASTER OF NURSING GATE SPEED, rANDALL IS YOUR MAN.

  2. calvin borel is just now being recognized for something he has done his whole life. love horses, ride horses, treat every man with equal respect and help other people….calvin, you are the man

  3. , “Oh, lots of people get their first taottos there.” What we didn’t catch was that he hadn’t really answered the question Apparently, the foot is one of the more painful locations for a tattoo because, like you said, there’s so little padding between the skin and underlying bones & stuff. But what made it much worse is that Dede apparently had a reaction to the red ink and it made her life kinda unbearable for several days.

  4. WOW! That’s beautiful. I love my tottao and would get another one in a heart beat but I want to wait and make it something special for my family (kids). Jen’s idea of birth month flowers is a great one! Did the black outline hurt the worst? That’s what made me really cringe. Or maybe I was just numb when he finally filled in the color?! lol.
