Cal State volleyball team moves up to fourth

Fresh off its two CCAA road victories last week, the Cal State San Bernardino volleyball team was selected fourth in this week’s AVCA Division II Coaches poll.

The Coyotes, who are 9-1 overall and atop the CCAA at 6-0, are at home this week beginning Wednesday night against Cal Poly Pomona. First serve is at 7 p.m. at Coussoulis Arena.

The Coyotes moved up one spot from fifth to fourth this week. Minnesota Duluth moves into the top sport, followed by Wayne (Neb.) State and Southwest Minnesota State. All three schools are members of the Northern Sun Conference.

The University of Tampa (Fla.) fell from first to fifth after a loss to unranked Rollins (Fla.).

SBVC impressive in 37-17 win over Santa Monica

The San Bernardino Valley College football team finally got into the win column, beating Santa Monica 37-17 tonight. The game wasn’t even that close as the Wolverines were up 30-0 before the Corsairs scored for the first time in the fourth quarter.

Some observations . . .
1. The Wolverines did a far better job in the secondary. They were torched pretty regularly in the first two games, both losses. They gave up 160 yards through the air but much of that came late with the outcome already in hand.
2. Kristin James is still having trouble hanging on to the ball. He’s one of the top backs in SoCal but what good is that when fumbles happen all too frequently. He had three in the first game, one in the second and another on his fourth carry tonight. And the recent one came after a 15-yard gain when he was clear of the line of scrimmage.
He fumbled another in the backfield late in the game but SBVC recovered and the pitch to him was not a good one.
The SBVC defense played well. Ricky Pesquera was the leader with several solid hits and tackles.
Next up is Citrus. Don’t think that wasn’t circled on the calendar the day the schedule came out. When the Wolverines gathered for their post-game huddle, SBVC coach Kevin Emerson reminded the players that he was fired by Citrus and let it be known how much he wants to win that game.
Here are some other scores in junior college play Saturday night:
Chaffey 12, Ventura 10

Mt.Sac 36, Riverside 10

Saddleback 49, Victor Valley 20

Selway, Tave honored by SCIAC

Football player Dan Selway of the University of Redlands and runner Jennifer Tave of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps have earned Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Athlete of the Week honors.

Selway earned accolades on the men’s side for his effort in Saturday’s 23-7 win against Whitworth (Wash.). The senior captain connected on 23 of his 35 attempts without an interception for a total of 214 passing yards, which included all three touchdowns. Selway also reverted back to his receiving days as a freshman, and caught a pass in the end zone for the two-point conversion on the second touchdown of the game.

The Redlands quarterback has helped the Bulldogs to a 2-0 start, compiling 360 total passing yards with a 69.5% completion rating and five touchdowns.

Meanwhile Tave led the Athenas to a ninth place finish (second among non-Division I teams) at the UC Riverside Invitational.

She finished 29th overall with a personal best time of 17:49.0 which is fourth best in CMS history. She finished nearly 20 seconds ahead of the closest SCIAC competitor. Of the 28 runners in front of her, 22 were Division I, 3 post-collegiate, 2 NAIA and one JC.
