Cal Poly Pomona men start the season No. 1

With a strong cast back from its Division II national championship team, Cal Poly Pomona is the No. 1 team in the 2010-11 Division II Bulletin Men’s Basketball Preseason Top 25 poll.

Cal Poly Pomona (28-6) shoots for its third straight title game this season with three returning starters and eight of its 10-man squad back. The Broncos will count on All-California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) players Dwayne Fells (9.2 ppg, 4.4 rpg) and Donnelle Booker (9.7 ppg, 5.6 rpg). Senior Tobias Jahn and sophomore guard Mitchel Anderson are expected to play big roles as well.

Rounding out the top five are Findlay, St. Cloud St., Indiana (Pa.) and Florida Southern.

The second five includes Bellarmine, Bentley, Tarleton St., Grand Valley St and St. Joseph’s.
Humboldt State is listed among teams to watch in 2010-11.
Cal Poly Pomona, which shared the CCAA regular-season title with Humboldt State, defeated Indiana (Pa.), 65-63, in the national championship game at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass.

Humboldt State, coming off a 22-8 season a year ago, is among a group of teams listed as possible breakthroughs. Junior forward Brian Morris, a preseason honorable mention All-American, leads the list of returning Lumberjacks.

Morris averaged 15.1 points and 6.4 rebounds a contest as a sophomore and was named a first team All-CCAA honoree.
