Coyotes fall from fourth to eighth

The Cal State San Bernardino women’s volleyball team fell from fourth to eighth in the American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division II poll released on Monday.

That drop is the result of a 3-2 loss to Cal State East Bay on Saturday. It was the first time this season the Coyotes (13-2) had been pushed to five games.

The fact that the traditional CCAA powers such as UC San Diego and Cal State Los Angeles seem a bit down doesn’t help the Coyotes cause. A few weeks back they dropped from second to fifth without losing. The perception is that the conference is down so any loss is going to prove costly.

There are three teams ranked ahead of Cal State that have more losses.

The first West Region poll will come out in a couple of weeks. That’s the one that really matters.

But here is the national poll.

1. Minnesota-Duluth (16-1)

2. Southwest Minnesota State (15-2

3. Tampa (Fla.) 15-3

4. Washburn (Kan.) 19-1

     Wayne State (Neb.) 16-2

6. Concordia-St. Paul 18-3

7. Central Missouri 18-3

8. Cal State San Bernardino 13-2

9. Nebraska-Kearney 18-3

10.  Truman 17-3

11. Lewis 15-2

12. Hillsdale (Mich) 15-1

13. Northern Michigan 15-0

14. Minnesota State 12-4

15. Emporia State 15-3

16. Western Washington 11-2

17. Seattle Pacific 16-1

18. Metro State 13-5

19. Missouri-St. Louis 14-3

20. Indianapolis 14-6

21. Abilene Christian 16-3

22. Dowling (NY) 14-0

23. Cal State East Bay 13-4

24. Cal State Monterey Bay 12-2

25. Grand Valley State (Mich.) 11-5

Dropped out: West Florida

Receiving votes: Florida Southern, West Florida, Rockhurst, West Texas A&M, Cal State Los Angeles, Wheeling Jesuit, Alaska-Anchorage, Barry (Fla.), Wingate (NC), Lynn (Fla.), Regis (Col.)

Bulldogs survive at Pomona-Pitzer

The Pomona-Pitzer football team proved you can win with two players – well almost.

The Sagehens came up short, falling to the University of Redlands 38-28 Saturday night in Claremont. The Bulldogs (3-1, 1-1) didn’t put the game away until late as the Sagehens (0-4, 0-1) stuck with them with quarterback Jacob Caron and his favorite wide receiver R. J. Maki doing pretty much all the work. Luke Sweeney had some nice runs, including a 9-yarder for a touchdown.
The Bulldogs had 14-point leads twice, 14-0 and 21-7. But the Sagehens were within two at 28-26 in the second half, the difference being two missed PAT kicks.
Redlands remained poised when the Sagehens challenged. Each time Pitzer got in striking distance, the Bulldogs answered with a drive of their own engineered by Dan Selway.
The Bulldogs made some personnel changes after last week’s 24-22 loss to Cal Lutheran. Connor Cook took over the kicking duties. Brad Crisanty got the majority of the playing time at running back in the second have and looked good. Some receivers saw more playing time with Taylor Irwin among those that had stellar games.
The Bulldogs didn’t go for two on their old swinging gate plays. They took the more conventional PAT kicks;
Selway threw for 323 yards while Caron threw for 207, 158 on 17 throws to Maki. Selway has a lot of help around him and the Bulldogs dress 100 players. Caron and Maki play hard and do it with little help around them. They are a fun duo to watch.
In other SCIAC games, just down the street Claremont-Mudd-Scripps beat non-conference Chapman 31-21 behind 116 yards rushing from Peter Kimmey and 98 by Spencer Clark, The Bulldogs play CMS next week and will need a better showing to get by that one.
The University of La Verne was blanked by Occidental 30-0. It was the 15th straight loss for the Leopards dating back to 2008.
In JuCo play San Bernardino Valley lost at Southwestern 45-42. The Wolverines have plenty of offense. If only they had a defense!

On this week’s area college football games . . .

There are only four area college football games to choose from this week. They are . . .

University of Redlands (2-1) at Pomona-Pitzer (0-3), 7 p.m.

The Bulldogs are coming off a 24-22 loss to Cal Lutheran in which the difference was a blocked 40-yard field goal attempt with 25 seconds left. They are left to ponder the what ifs. Sometimes its hard to regroup after a game like that, especially against a foe whom you have handled easily. The Sagehens have a couple of offensive weapons but they don’t have enough. And their defense won’t contain the Bulldogs. Should be an easy win for Redlands.

Chapman (1-2) at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (3-0), 7 p.m.

The Stags have looked solid but their three wins are over teams with a collective record of 2-8. we may not know much this week either with Chapman only 1-2. CMS must avoid looking past this game to Redlands next week. I see them getting by here too though.

Occidental (2-1) at La Verne (0-3), 1 p.m.

The poor Leopards can’t seem to get a break. They are coming off a 20-14 loss to CMS last week. CMS coach Steve Retzlaff said he was impressed with La Verne’s progress but unfortunately for the Leopards that hasn’t manifested itself in the win column in too long. La Verne nearly upset Oxy last year and the Tigers don’t seem to have quite the firepower they had then. But it’s hard to pick a team to win that hasn’t proved that it can. Oxy will get by again.

The lone JuCo game on tap as both Chaffey an Victor Valley are idle.

San Bernardino Valley (2-2) at Southwestern (2-2), 6 p.m.

The Wolverines have some momentum with back-to-back wins over Santa Monica and Citrus, the latter coming on the heels of a record-breaking performance by Kristin James who is doing better at hanging on to the ball. SBVC has looked suspect on defense but has gotten bye on its offensive firepower. If James runs wild again, that will open it up for the passing game. Look for SBVC to get past the .500 mark for the first time this season.
