Chaffey, SBVC men get ready for battle

The men’s basketball teams from Chaffey and San Bernardino Valley College will square off at SBVC at 3 p.m. on Saturday. First place will be on the line as the Wolverines (14-9, 8-1) go in one game ahead of Chaffey (14-7, 7-2) and Barstow.

It should be quite the clash. SBVC won the first battle by digits but the game was really closer than that as the Panthers faltered down the stretch.
Both teams got off to slow starts this season. SBVC was 4-8early and most figured it would eventually get its act together. There were just a lot of newcomers learning to play together. But now they are back on track and looking like the favorite again.
Chaffey also got off to a slow start. Things didn’t look quite so promising for the Panthers. Coach Jeff Klein asked me on Wednesday if there was any player on his team that could play for SBVC. I had a hard time coming up with an answer.
But the Panthers play solid defense and team basketball and that has been the key. This might be Klein’s best coaching job in his years there if you consider where this team started.
The women’s teams will play at 1 p.m. Chaffey is coming off an upset of Antelope Valley that puts SBVC in first place alone. The Wolverines are ranked No. 2 in the state.
