Chaffey men win; SBVC, Barstow fall

The community college playoffs got underway on Friday with three local teams in action and the results were favorable for just one.

Chaffey defeated Los Angeles Trade Tech 66-63 with Steffon Neal hitting a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left for the winning points. Trade Tech did not play well and Chaffey wasn’t at its best either. The difference is that the Panthers hit from the perimeter, making 10 three’s while the Beavers didn’t have one. Their final shot to try and tie didn’t even draw iron.
Donte Godloock had 19 and Deandre Brodie 15. Neal only had seven but did have 12 rebounds.
San Bernardino Valley got thumped by Irvine Valley 63-50 and ends its season 17-12. Perhaps there were just too many newcomers this year. They’ll have pretty much everyone back next year so expect better things. Keon Pledger had 12 points but was the lone Wolverine in double figures.
Barstow was beaten by Saddleback 75-52. La Vanne Pennington tallied 24 but was the lone Viking to really show up. Reggie Howard has the program on the rise and getting into the playoffs this year was a good start.
Also Mt,. San Jacinto held off Riverside 71-70 in overtime.
The women are up today.
Chaffey faces a formidable challenge in No, 1 Fullerton. The Panthers won a play-in game on Wednesday against L.A. Pierce.
No. 2 San Bernardino will host Santa Barbara.
Both games are at 7 p.m.
