Cal Poly women on to nationals

The Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team finished off Grand Canyon 68-61 in the NCAA Division II West Region final at Kellogg Gymnasium.

It was a great game in a great atmosphere. It was only fitting it go down to the final second.
Now its on to the Elite Eight where the Broncos (28-4) will face Northwest Missouri State (27-4) on March 22 in the quarterfinal. It will be the ninth national tournament appearance for the Broncos but the first since 2002.
Reyana Colson was her normal great self with 28 points, winning the individual battle against Grand Canyon’s Samantha Murphy who tallied 24. Murphy led the nation in scoring this season while Colson was second. But Colson got hers taking 16 shots while Murphy needed 23.
It was a good stage for the two stars.
Colson had lots of help though. La’Kenya Simon-West had 11 points and seven rebounds while Megan Ford added 10 with nine rebounds.
Jallisa Butler of Grand Canyon had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Halftime at Kellogg and the Broncos lead 26-19

The Cal Poly Pomona women lead Grand Canyon 26-19 at the half in the NCAA Division II West Region title tilt at Kellogg Gymnasium.

If you’re Grand Canyon you’re happy only being down by seven. The Antelopes are just 7 of 28 from the field (25 percent) and have nine turnovers. It could be much worse. Super stud Samantha Murphy has nine points but is just 3 for 12 from the field.
The Broncos have been all over the place on defense. They have expended a lot of energy on that end of the floor which might be part of the reason they are shooting just 33.3 percent (10 for 30) from the field.
Their stud Reyana Colson has eight points on 3 for 9 shooting from the floor. Megan Ford has six points, five rebounds and three steals, Sarah Semenero has six rebounds.
One other note, NBA referee Violet Palmer is in the house observing the officials.

Tip off time at Kellogg Gymnasium

The Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team has just taken the court for the opening tipoff against Grand Canyon.

At stake is a berth in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. It’s a familiar spot for the Broncos, not so for the Antelopes who had not won a playoff game before this tournament.
The gym has been flooded by Purple people, as in Grand Canyon supporters. There are twice as many and they are twice as loud as the Bronco faithful. That’s embarrassing!
Now there is 3:05 left in the half and Cal Poly leads 22-33.
The Grand Canyon cheerleaders are on the floor, rallying their supporters and the Cal Poly cheerleaders are standing in the end like bumps on a log.
The winner will play Northwest Missouri State (27-4) in the national quarterfinal. Northwest Missouri won the South Central Region, beating Central Oklahoma 82-70 earlier today.
