Cal Poly Pomona senior catcher Jenzen Torres hit three home runs in Friday’s 9-4 win at Cal State East Bay, giving him the school career record of 34.
The big day moved him past Travis Taijeron, who had 32 before graduating a year ago, and Tom Weeks, who had 33 from 1984-87.
Torres also matched the single-game record for homers as Larry Reed (1963) and Brad Downing (1997) are the only other players to hit three in one contest.
Torres, a native of Valencia, also is second on the career list in RBIs with 168.
“It’s a great honor when you consider the history and tradition of this program,” Torres said. “After I tied the record (Kevin) Bosson came up and said something about it.”
Torres and the Broncos (31-18, 23-17) have completed the regular season and must wait to see if they will make the four-team conference tournament. They are fourth based on winning percentage but the three teams right behind them are in contention and have four games left this week.
