Gretchen Magers has been named the head coach for CMS
women’s tennis. She joins CMS effective immediately.

“Gretchen brings a phenomenal background of competitive experiences
in tennis: Collegiate, International, Olympic, and as a teaching pro,”
Athletic Director Mike Sutton said.  “All this is coupled with her enthusiasm, energy, and
excitement for the opportunity of working with a team of
student-athletes who have the potential to excel in collegiate tennis. 
We are very fortunate to have Coach Magers in our program and I look
forward to the continued growth and success of Athena tennis.”

Magers has been the head women’s tennis coach for San Diego City
College since 2008.  She has previously served as head women’s tennis
coach at Our Lady of Peace High School from 1995-97 and as an assistant
coach for the women’s tennis team at San Diego State University in the
1993-94 academic year. 

“I can’t wait to get to Claremont and help the CMS Athenas tennis
team reach new heights,” said Magers.  “It is a dream come true for me
to be at a school like the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.  The
academic reputations, the exceptional student bodies and world class
facilities make for an ideal environment for our student-athletes to
thrive.  I am so grateful for the opportunity to work with the returning
players.”

Magers played 10 years on the WTA tour and was a top 20 singles and
doubles player. She was a quarterfinalist at the U.S. Open, French Open
and Wimbledon. She represented the United States in the 1984 Olympics,
the World University Games, the Pan American Games and the Senior ITF
World Championships.  Collegiately, she was a four-time All-American at
Trinity University where she was NCAA doubles champion in 1983 and NCAA
runner-up in singles and doubles in both 1985 and 1986.

Magers replaces Mazanne Retzlaff who resigned earlier this summer after two decades directing the program.
