This week’s local college football games

It’s the last week of action for local college football teams. SBVC might get a bowl game but other than that it’s pretty much the end of the road.

Redlands (5-3, 5-1) at Whittier (4-4, 3-3), 1 p.m.

Whittier has improved considerably and looks like it might finally have the right coach. But the Poets aren’t good enough to get past one of the SCIAC juggernauts yet, mainly because the defense is not yet good enough. – Redlands 42, Whitter 37

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (0-8, 0-6) at Pomona-Pitzer (0-8, 0-6), 1 p.m.

Someone has to win. It’s been a miserable year for each and both of them came in with higher expectations. Both teams are young and the Sagehens are young and injured which makes for a bad combination. If Sagehens RB Luke Sweeney, who is 10 yards from the school career-record in rushing, was healthy I would probably go with the Sagehens but Coach Roger Caron hedged when I asked him Sweeney’s health today. So I am going with the Stags.

Occidental (2-6, 2-4) at La Verne (3-5, 3-3), 1 p.m.

Speaking of miserable seasons. How the mighty have fallen. Occidental used to be the cream of the crop, right up there with Redlands and now Cal Lutheran has overtaken both. But the Tigers are struggling big time and the Leopard program is one on the rise and is playing at home. So not a hard pick here.

– La Verne 38, Occidental 14.

In the community college ranks . . .

Compton (0-9, 0-6) at San Bernardino Valley (5-4, 4-2), 6 p.m.

It’s the name your score game. Well since SBVC is missing its starting quarterback maybe it won’t be that bad! Who I am I kidding, yes it will be. Compton is going to be winless for the second year in a row and has won like one game in the last four years. It’s a pad your stats and get everyone in the game contest.

– San Bernardino 48, Compton 7

Southwestern (8-1, 6-0) at Chaffey (2-7, 2-4), 6 p.m.

Still on the topic of bad seasons. The Panthers are going to end up with its worst record since a 3-7 in 1993 under the previous coach. The Jaguars throw the ball and pass defense is not a Chaffey strong suit. Unless the Panthers dig really deep this one could be ugly too.

– Southwestern 48, Chaffey 21

Victor Valley (2-7, 1-5) at Mt. San Jacinto (8-1, 5-1), 1 p.m.

Am I being Debbie Downer? Ok, so need need going on about this one either.

– Mt. San Jacinto 45, Victor Valley 27
