CalPoly Pomona men off to good start

The Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball team traditionally gets off to a slow start, hits its stride about the middle of CCAA play and heads into the postseason with momentum.

But this year the Broncos are off to a 7-0 start. Future opponents look out. The start is probably a bit of a surprise considering the number of newcomers in the fold as well as the tough conference games it has been able to win on the road.

After two years missing the playoffs the Broncos look ready to challenge again.

The nonconference schedule has consisted of four games – two against respectable foes and two against just plain awful teams. But what the Broncos have managed to do in conference play is noteworthy.

The Broncos won a game at Humboldt State, probably the toughest venue in which CCAA teams play. They also swept defending conference champion Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus in the same road trip which is the second-toughest trek to only the Humboldt trip. So the Broncos won them all and got them out of the way early.

Next Saturday the Broncos will host Humboldt, thus getting both travel partner games out of the way before Christmas. They are setting themselves up quite nicely.

The Broncos once again have that great player to build the team around in senior Mitchel Anderson, a prominent player on the squad since he arrived as a freshman. He’s the floor catalyst and the leader. Then there are a couple of strong lieutenants in DeRonn Scott and Terrence Drisdom.

The newcomers have just followed the leaders.

If the Broncos are playing this well now, think how scarey they’re going to be by March.
