After 14 years directing the University of Redlands baseball program, Scott Laverty has resigned to take the same position at Chapman University in Orange.

Laverty says the biggest factor in the decision was family. He, wife Julie, and nine-month old daughter Emerson, reside in nearby Placentia.

“It was difficult decision made easier by the fact I’ll be closer to my family. It’s seven miles to work rather than 50, surface streets basically,” he said.

Laverty has developed the Redlands baseball program into one of the top NCAA Division III programs in the west. Under his guidance, the Bulldogs have won two Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships, finished in the top three in the conference in seven of his 14 seasons, and made two NCAA Championship appearances.

In the 102 completed seasons of Bulldog baseball, Laverty’s 298 wins are second all-time to the 304 victories amassed by Paul Taylor during his tenure in 1960-1978.

Laverty replaces Tom Tereschuk (2003-13) and joins a program steeped in tradition. The Panthers made 14 NCAA Division III playoff appearances, won 10 West Region championships and one national championship (2003). Chapman also placed third at the national championships twice and finished in second place once.

Chapman joined the SCIAC last year. The baseball team struggled uncharacteristically but had just one senior and 17 freshmen.
