The Cal State San Bernardino volleyball team opens the 2013 campaign ranked 14th in NCAA Division II by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Coach Kim Cherniss begins her 23rd season at the helm with a 499-190 overall record.

Pacific West Conference contender BYU-Hawaii, which snapped the Coyotes’ four-year grip on the NCAA West Region title last season, is ranked fifth and is the West’s top-ranked team. Fellow Pacific West member Fresno Pacific is 12th. Other West Region teams ranked in the top 25 are: Western Washington (17th), UC San Diego (22nd) and Central Washington (24th).

Concordia-St. Paul earned the top spot in the poll. The Golden Bears have won the last six consecutive NCAA titles.

The Coyotes begin their chase for an eighth-consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association title after going 26-9 and reaching the NCAA West Regional final for a phenomenal 13th consecutive season in 2012.  Their non-conference schedule is a difficult one with three top-25 matches in the first eight days of the season. CSUSB faces No. 24 CWU and No. 13 Regis during the Coyote Classic and plays No. 12 Fresno Pacific at the UC San Diego Tourney on Sept. 13.
