The University of La Verne volleyball team just missed cracking the NCAA Division III national preseason ranking by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

The Leopards, coached by Jenna Panatier, finished 22-6 overall in 2012, advancing to the NCAA West Region semifinals before falling to favored Cal Lutheran.

Two SCIAC schools are ranked. Cal Lutheran is ranked 10th and Chapman is 18th.

La Verne had 74 points, the most of teams not making the Top 25. No. 25 was Wisconsin-Stevens Point which had 131 points.

St. Thomas (Minn.), 39-1 last year, is first with Calvin second.

The Leopards open the season against Willamette (Ore.) on Aug. 30 at the Pacific Coast Classic.
