CCAA Women’s poll out

Chico State is predicted to repeat history by capturing the 2013-14 regular-season California Collegiate Athletic Association title, according to a poll of Conference coaches.

The Wildcats received 112 points and seven first-place votes, just ahead of Cal Poly Pomona.  The Broncos, who wrapped up the 2012-13 season in sixth, have been forecasted to finish second in the conference with 101 points and four first-place votes.

The Coyotes, who have added former Cal State Monterey Bay head coach Renee Jimenez, totaled 77 points and nabbed a single first-place vote but are predicted to finish seventh.

Reigning CCAA Coach of the Year, Brian Fogel returns for his sixth season after guiding Chico State to an overall record of 23-6, which included their fifth consecutive post-season appearance and second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance.  The Wildcats return six from last year’s roster, including First-team All-CCAA selections—Courtney Hamilton and Jasmine Miller.  Hamilton wrapped up the 2012-13 season as the Conference leader in assists (4.6 p/g), while Miller finished as one of the CCAA’s top scorers with a .831 free-throw percentage and 46 three-pointers.

Cal Poly Pomona’s 2012-13 post-season play was short lived after being eliminated by Cal State Monterey Bay in the first-round of the CCAA Championship Tournament.  The Broncos have five-top guards returning from last year’s squad, including their top scorer J.J. Judge who led Cal Poly Pomona with 14.3 points per contest.  Defending CCAA Freshman of the Year, Cydnie Jones will also look to lead the Broncos squad after averaging 7.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per game in her rookie season.

Chico State is the only Conference women’s basketball team to appear ranked in the USA TODAY Sports Division II preseason coaches poll.  The Wildcats are No. 17 among the nation’s top 25 teams.
